Diana West: Admitting Turkey to EU means Eurabia | Washington Examiner

"Diana West: Admitting Turkey to EU means Eurabia

August 1, 2010

Whether to admit Turkey to the European Union seems to be an eternal battle, at least among the EU's rulers. Among the peoples of Europe, when granted the rare chance to go to the ballot box -- increasingly window dressing as far as the EU's soft totalitarians are concerned -- there is little argument."

Most of my writing time is spent forming the next sentence in my imagination. When my mind is busy with words, all by itself my eye moves away from the page and the tip of the fountain pen. This is the landscape I have gazed upon through my Istanbul window for the last 15 years. On the left side is Asia and in the middle the Bosphorus and its opening to the Sea of Marmara, as well as the islands I have been going to each summer for 58 years. To the right is the entrance to the Golden Horn and the part of the city that Istanbul residents refer to as the Old Town, home of the Ottoman dynasty for four centuries, including Topkapi Palace, the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque."

Tony Blair – Turkey, EU And Cyprus

The stalling of US and UK ambitions for Turkey to become a member of the EU during December 2006 has presented a challenge for Tony Blair during his sunset period as British Prime Minister.

Turkey is a longstanding member of NATO, and was actively supported by successive US administrations during the Cold War with the USSR, due to its strategic location. After the collapse of communism, Turkey assumed a new importance as a model for a secular and democratic Muslim state. In addition, its boundaries with Syria, Iraq and Iran place it adjacent to several ‘axis of evil’ states."

It cannot be easy finding the right words for a joint public appearance with Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan – and prime minister David Cameron did not find them this week. European leaders have always seen Turkey as a “bridge” between the west and the Muslim world. But since the European Union opened negotiations with Turkey for full membership in 2005, Mr Erdogan has in many ways turned from the west. He has accused the Israeli government of war crimes while absolving the Sudanese government of them. He has accused Germany of “hatred” for Turkey, while his aides have cast doubt on the idea that Iran’s nuclear-weapons programme is meant to produce nuclear weapons."

The European Investment Bank today signed two loans for a total amount of EUR 150 million in support of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Turkey. The two EIB loans of EUR 75 million each went to Akbank and Halk Bank. They consist of a combination of EIB funds (80%) and European Union grants (20%) for onlending concessional financing to smaller Turkish companies. The loans reflect the common goal of the EIB and the EU to support these companies as part of an integrated European response in favour of Turkish SMEs whose funding prospects have become more vulnerable given the impact of the global economic crisis. The financing is put in place in cooperation with the Turkish Treasury."

Sometimes in the world (if not so often in the US), foreign policy really isn't about Israel. A reader writes:

The recent screeching coming from the neocon stands with regard to Turkey seem to miss the fact Turkey is emerging as the major energy broker of the region with the help of the UK. Take the Baku–Tbilisi–Ceyhan pipeline for instance. As its name implies, this pipeline takes crude oil from the Caspian fields all the way to the Mediterranean Turkish sea port of Ceyhan. The pipeline, which came into full operation in May 2006, has for its largest shareholder a company called BP (30.1%). Then there is the South Caucasus pipeline (December 2006), which takes natural gas along the same route as the previously mentioned pipeline but ends up at Erzurum in Turkey instead, where it is joined by the Tabriz-Ankara pipeline coming from the gas fields of Iran (yes, Iran). BP is also an important shareholder of the South Caucasus pipeline (25.5%). The geo-strategic aims of these two projects were to diversify the energy supplies and lessen Europe's dependence on Russian oil and gas."

David Cameron was too polite to say it in so many words, but his audience of Turkish MPs got the point: the EU is treating them shabbily.

Singly, Europe's governments have perfectly consistent policies. Some countries want, in Gladstone's unhappy phrase, 'to bundle the Turk, bag and baggage, out of Europe'. France, Austria and (less vocally) Germany are in this camp. Others, led by Britain, see Turkish membership as strategically valuable: a way to bolster the world's chief Muslim democracy and perhaps, in the process, to dilute Euro-federalism."

The EU is treating Turkey shabbily. Singly, member states have perfectly consistent policies. Some countries want, in Gladstone’s phrase, to bundle the Turk, bag and baggage, out of Europe. France, Austria and (less vocally) Germany are in this camp. Others, led by Britain, see Turkish membership as strategically valuable: a way to bolster the world’s chief Muslim democracy and perhaps, in the process, to dilute Euro-federalism. Either of these two positions is individually defensible. But, when blended, they make for a policy based on deceit. The EU holds out promises of accession without any real intent to honour them. In consequence, it risks creating the very thing it purports to fear: an alienated, snarling Islamic power on its borders."

"Turkey Going Nuclear – A Game Changer

The World Tribune’s Gregory Copley has broken the news that “U.S. powerlessness and EU confusion” have opened a “window of opportunity” for Turkey to seriously consider acquiring nuclear weapons. Just last month, Turkey defied its traditional allies, including the United States and Israel, by voting against a fourth round of U.N. sanctions against Iran, in punishments for Tehran’s continued pursuit of nuclear weapons. Further, Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has displayed growing Islamist sympathies and exercises an undemocratic stranglehold on power, raising legitimate questions about Turkey’s commitment to secular democracy as well as to NATO"

"Ankara in the Middle
Once an unquestioning U.S. ally, and at odds with most of its neighbors, Turkey is now forging a new foreign policy, with itself at the very center.

Turkey, says the conventional wisdom, is “turning east.” Over the last two years Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has proclaimed Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad a “good friend” and blasted Israel for attacking a Turkish aid convoy to Gaza. He signed accords with Syria and Iraq and defended Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir as “a good Muslim.” Only last week Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu caused outrage in Israel by meeting with Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal."

What a difference a month makes! Just a few weeks ago, on May 31st, the Israelis intercepted the Gaza Freedom Flotilla, killing at least nine people while boarding the Turkish ship Mava Marmara in international waters. That bloody tragedy changed everything, despite desperate attempts of the Israeli government and US proxies to spin the story. Turkish cement sector faces energy cost hit

"Turkish cement sector faces energy cost hit Thursday, 22 July 2010 01:31

ISTANBUL: Turkey’s cement sector growth could hit double-digits this year on domestic demand, although higher energy prices will likely sap profits, Turkey’s Cement Manufacturers’ Association (TCMA) said.

Chairman Adnan Ignebekcili said the industry association expected growth of 8 percent to 10 percent would feed into higher revenues, although profits would lag 2009.

“Revenues will rise slightly as prices increase, but costs will increase by a larger amount. Import coal and petrocoke prices have risen 100 percent since the start of the year,” he added."

"Can America rely on Turkey? (Rep. John Sarbanes)
By Rep. John Sarbanes (D-Md.) - 07/20/10 01:35 PM ET

Turkey has been getting a lot of attention recently. American foreign policymakers, among others, are beginning to realize that the United States cannot count on its ally Turkey in a pinch. But American surprise and dismay at Turkey's increasing petulance on the world stage and among its NATO peers reflects just how naive the U.S. has been in its interpretation of Turkish behavior over many decades. Turkey's unreliability as a NATO ally and its incompatibility with Western democratic values is well understood by those who have long suffered Turkish aggression in the Eastern Mediterranean."

Turkey and the EU: Don't blame Europe for Turkey's moves away from the West - latimes.com

"Don't blame Europe for Turkey's moves away from the West
Continued rejection by the European Union does not alone account for Turkey's embrace of Muslim nations. The U.S. must push the Turks to reform internally.

In an interview this month with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, President Obama suggested that the European Union's continued reluctance to accept Turkey into its ranks has pushed Turkish leadership to 'look for other alliances' and move toward closer relations with other Muslim nations in the Middle East. These comments echoed Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates, who last month blamed Europe for Ankara's movement away from the West."

If Israel's blockade on shipping weapons and war materiel to Gaza were really so terrible, would Gaza have celebrated the opening of a new luxury shopping mall last weekend? To be sure, numbers of people are kept in tents to provide photo ops for the anti-Israel media, and to provide 'victims' to fire up Jew haters. But the realitry is that Gaza enjoys abundant supplies of necessities through channels obligingly kept open by The Zionist Entity, including the building materials necessary for a shopping mall filled with luxury goods."
