The sun begins to set, reflecting a pearly light from the silvery domes and slim minarets of the palaces and mosques, the colour gradually deepening to a darker shade of pink. Then the call to prayer begins, passing from one minaret to the next, echoing all around this ancient city. We sit entranced on our hotel balcony until the sky turns inky blue and a sliver of new moon rises."
