* Interview with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sedat Lacsner by Kaitlin MacKenzie

Q - How has Turkey’s role in the Middle East changed over time?

SL: Turkey could not play an important role in the Middle East after the First World War. The main reasons for this, there are many, but economic weakness and the situation in the Middle East, the Cold War competition, are among themany reasons that prevented Turkey from having strong Middle East policies. During that time, outside powers especially were effective in the region. The UK and France dominated the Middle East until the Second World War, after which they reluctantly left the region to the US. But the problem was that the US was not an experienced super power."
