Coming to terms with the past

"Coming to terms with the past
By Jasper Mortimer

Letter from Ankara

A WAVE of anti-Israeli fervour has swept Turkey in past weeks, culminating in Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s storming out of a debate with Israeli President Shimon Peres in Davos.

It wasn’t just Erdogan who beat the anti-Israeli drum. Shops and dolmushes (collective taxis) displayed pictures of the Gaza carnage with the headline “We condemn child-killer Israel.”

At times the emotionalism turned starkly anti-Jewish. Some restaurants put up signs saying “Jews and Armenians prohibited, dogs may enter,” provoking protests from Turkey’s tiny Jewish community."
