The news of the AKP’s closure case was met with astonishment by European Union (EU) officials and capitals. In fact, they were more surprised than we were, for in their world, it would have been impossible to file such a case. They were confronted with a phenomenon that defied their logic. To Europe, democracy was more important than anything else. Democracy meant that governments were elected by the people to rule the country. Nothing could come before this principle. All European values were based on giving priority to democracy."
