Turkey does not have a lot of friends in Europe, and often disappoints, confuses, and discredits the friends it has. EU Commissioner for Enlargement Olli Rehn, is one of the only commissioners interested in keeping Turkey’s accession process on track. Joost Lagendijk, co-chair of the Turkey-EU Joint Parliamentary Commission, is also a strong advocate of Turkey’s EU bid – but likely not to run as a candidate in the 2009 elections."
