Hundreds of people have been arrested, and dozens injured, in violent May Day clashes between police and demonstrators in Istanbul. Thousands of riot police were deployed in the streets around the city's main Taksim Square, preventing marchers' plans to commemorate the deaths of 37 people shot or trampled to death in the square in 1971."
