Institute Fellow's Los Angeles Times Op-Ed Stirs Controversy

"Institute Fellow's Los Angeles Times Op-Ed Stirs Controversy

April 4, 2008

On March 15, Institute senior fellow Soner Cagaptay published an op-ed in the Los Angeles Times highlighting the changes in Turkey since the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) came to power in 2002.

Among other things, Cagaptay pointed to the fact that Turkish public opinion has cooled toward the United States and warmed toward Iran since 2002. Although 30 percent of Turks approved of the United States in 2002, only 9 percent did so in 2007. Meanwhile, Turkish approval for Iran rose from 22 percent to 28 percent over the same period."
