"Turkey as seen from Brussels last week Monday, December 10, 2007

Ariana Ferentinou

During the visit of Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan to Greece, I was in neither Greece nor Turkey. I was in Brussels. With a group of my students from the Istanbul Bilgi University Faculty of Communications, we were the guests of the independent Greek Cypriot MEP Mr. Yannis Matsis to visit the European parliament and be guided through the intricacies of its functions – thanks to a quota of guests that every MEP has in their budget. So, my Turkish students were able to have a real taste of the corridors of power in the heart of the European Union for the first time. They were able to hear EP functionaries explaining to them how the different and diverse nations that compose the European Union today can send their elected members to the biggest Legislative Body in the world. The European parliament does not consist of groups of political parties but of different groups, the largest of which is the Popular Group followed by the Socialists. "
