"CHP Leader Baykal: AKP Is Transforming Turkey Into An Islamist State
The Turkish government introduced its 2008 budget to the parliament amid strong criticism by the opposition parties. In his address to the parliament Republican People Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal said, “The ruling party (AKP) is transforming Turkey's structure. There are efforts to capture the state and turn it to a different direction. Turkey is no longer the secular republic of Atatürk but as a moderate Islamist state”. “Democracy does not mean establishing a political hegemony by using the authority and the power of the state,” Baykal said, criticizing the AKP for partisan appointments to critical state institutions."
