"Turkey's Leadership: Between a Rock and a Hard Place

The situation on the Turkish-Iraqi border, where Turkey has amassed a substantial military force, ready to move into Iraqi Kurdistan, is being closely watched by political leaders and the mass media across the world. At a conference in Istanbul devoted to ways of normalizing the situation in Iraq, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice effectively steered the discussion toward the standoff between Turkey and Iraqi Kurdistan. On November 5, the issue was discussed at a meeting between Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan and U.S. President Bush. The United States is using heavy political artillery to dissuade Turkey from going ahead with a full scale invasion of northern Iraq. The Baghdad authorities are making similar efforts."
