"Turkey set for referendum to decide how to elect presidents

ISTANBUL, Turkey: Three months after general elections provoked by debate over the selection of the president, Turkey is holding a referendum Sunday on whether future presidents should be elected by popular vote.

Parliament had already tried to change the law to make it possible to elect the head of state by direct popular vote, but the referendum was forced by staunchly secular former President Ahmed Necdet Sezer, who vetoed the move."
