Is Turkey European or not? This is an old topic of discussion both in Turkey and in the EU. During the days of the Ottoman Empire, Turks were never interested in this question, but in the last decades of the empire some groups within the Ottoman administration thought that the empire should be European. This coincides with the time when European powers preferred to envision numerous countries in our geography rather than a single and comprehensive empire."
