"Lake dries out in İzmir, 80 percent of fish die Since Lake
Belevi in the Seljuk district of İzmir dried up, more than half of the fish in the lake have died and 19 different species of birds have abandoned it. Local villagers are trying to protect the fish at Lake Belevi from fishermen who are looking to take advantage of the situation. The district governor and the villagers carried water from 12 wells in the Tire district over a 24 hour period in an effort to preserve what remains of the lake’s wildlife; villagers are now guarding the fish from fish hunters."
