BRUSSELS - They never used to stress it this much. They never brought it forward in their statements, maybe because we never asked about it. This time I insistently brought it up. A very significant and interesting curtain was opened, and EU officials came on stage saying that they were the guarantors of the secular-democratic system in Turkey. “The reason we never underlined it very much was the fact that a secular-democracy was a basic condition of full membership anyway. "
