ISTANBUL, Turkey: Turkey's main opposition leader said Tuesday his party would not back a presidential candidate whose secular credentials were questionable, while a government spokesman said the elections showed that Turks oppose military involvement in politics.
Turkey held general elections Sunday to defuse political tension sparked by a conflict over the ruling Islamic-rooted party's choice of candidate for president-- a dispute in which the army threatened to intervene to safeguard secular principles."
