SECULARISM: Turkey's secular establishment, backed by the military and other state institutions, fears that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's ruling Justice and Development Party seeks to undermine revered secularist principles. Erdogan and other party leaders have backgrounds in political Islam, but have vowed to uphold secularism and have pursued Western-style reforms that allowed the country to start European Union membership negotiations in 2005."
