July 22 (Bloomberg) -- Turks are voting today to decide whether Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan should be given a mandate to loosen the army's eight-decade grip on politics.

Erdogan expressed optimism about the outcome after voting in Uskudar, his district on the Asian side of the Bosporus strait in Istanbul, along with his wife Emine, who wore a cream- colored headscarf. ``I believe our democracy will emerge much stronger with this election,'' he told reporters. ``This isn't just a message to our country, but a message to the world.''"
