Turkey calls on the Muslim countries who are members of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) to take action on putting into effect a preferential trade system.
“The preferential tariffs plan has not yet been signed or ratified. I invite member states to immediately sign it and take an active part in negotiations over the plan,” Ekmeleddin İhsanoğlu, the Turkish secretary-general of the 57-nation OIC said in his message at the 23rd meeting of the Follow-Up Committee of COMCEC, hosted by Turkey. He also proposed an OIC trade and finance institution, saying this would help plans to bring to life an effective preferential trade system."

During a televised interview on Tuesday, Erdogan called the court's May 1 decision to cancel a presidential vote [JURIST report] for lack of quorum a 'disgrace to the justice system.' Tugcu said she believed the remarks demonstrated an increasing lack of respect for Turkey's high court. Despite her concerns, Erdogan is unlikely to be prosecuted because parliament, where Erdogan's supporters hold a majority of seats, would first have to vote to revoke his immunity before charges could be brought. "The “Turkish Question” Remains
By Allen Wolfe
In early May, the streets of Istanbul were filled with tens of thousands of protestors. The walkways were flooded with red as Turkish secularists waved their country’s flag. This was the third largest secularist protest in a month that contested the Republic’s religious fanaticism. Carrying portraits of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, founder of modern day Turkey, protestors sent a message to the government that they say is upholding increasingly more Islamic values. Mass mobilization of Turks from rural areas into the secularist urban centers has raised concern among the predominantly secularist citizens that already occupy most large cities. They are concerned that lack of religious freedom in Turkey is the reason why the country was recently excluded from the European Union (EU)."

Suspended between an uncertain Muslim world and a democratic Europe, a battle is brewing between Islamists and secularists in Turkey. Under a sea of red-and-white Turkish flags, tens of thousands of Turks took to the streets in the Black Sea coastal town of Samsun in late May in a series of rallies against the pro-Islamic government led by AKP, which they fear is conspiring to force its religious values on society. "No to Sharia," "Turkey is secular and will remain secular," the protesters, predominantly women and youth, recited in a growing chorus of demonstrations. This latest display of secular strength follows mammoth demonstrations in the country's three largest cities -- Istanbul, Izmir, and Ankara -- attracting as many as one and a half million people at each stop."

Ankara Bombing Poses Economic Risks to Turkey
"Ankara Bombing Poses Economic Risks to Turkey
By Frank Hyland
The May 22 suicide bomb attack in Ankara contains elements that are potentially worrisome for the Turkish government, its people and tourists visiting Turkey. If bombings of the same modus operandi continue, a strong, dependable U.S. local ally in the Iraq theater of operations as well as in the wider global response to terrorism could see an intensification of a campaign not yet witnessed to this degree. Turkish authorities first directed suspicions at Kurdish separatists. Initial reports from Ankara police sources, quoted by the Turkish private NTV television channel, stated that the explosion was caused by A-4 plastic explosives, commonly used by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in their long-running effort to establish a Kurdish state."

"Armenian atrocities against Jews in the Ottoman Empire
Tuesday , 29 May 2007
View by By Belma BUZCAN
The Ottoman experience vividly proves that anti-Semitism is an 'old Armenian habit'. The firts reason for anti-semitism among the Ottoman Armenians was mainly religious biases. Then the economic competition was added to the reasons. The Armenians together with the Greek Ottomans attacked the Jewish bankers, doctors and businessmen in the Ottoman Palace and main cities. It is unfortunate that the Armenian attacks continued during the First World War and the armed Armenian groups targeted not only the Turks and Kurds but also the Jewish people in the Eastern Ottoman State."

ISTANBUL—Walk down the pedestrian-jammed Istiklal Street in Istanbul's fashionable Beyoglu neighborhood day or night, and you sense the tremendous energy that has been unleashed in Turkey during the past decade. Founded by Italian merchants in Byzantine times, this vibrant district, rising above the northern shore of the Golden Horn, was until recently one of the city's shabbier quarters. But since its conversion into a mostly car-free zone in the late 1990s—one of the many shrewd calls made by the city's then Islamist government—Beyoglu has taken off. The maze of narrow streets branching off the boutique-lined Istiklal buzz with trendy cafes, clubs, and restaurants, while apartments that sell faster than they can be refurbished appreciate at the clip of about 25 percent a year."

A grand coalition is still possible
"A grand coalition is still possible
By Nicos A Rolandis
TWENTY-SIX months ago, I wrote an article exhorting DISY and AKEL – the two parties that have historically similar views on the question of Cyprus – to form a grand coalition at the next presidential elections with the basic objective of resolving in a pragmatic way the problem. I also wrote that it would prove much more awkward to achieve a solution as time goes by.
I do not know whether there is still any possibility left to reunite Cyprus. During the last four years, the texture of the Cyprus problem has been seriously impaired. All aspects are in shambles. Greek Cypriot properties in the occupied north have been built up and sold to foreigners. An influx of approximately 60,000 new settlers from Turkey has pushed the total to 200,000. The Turkish Cypriots have recently distanced themselves from the Greek Cypriots. The anticipation of an adjustment and return of territory (Famagusta, Morphou plus 50-odd villages) is now hovering in an air of dreamland. Who will ever manage to reverse this situation, how and when?"

If there was a genre such as academic journalism, Kızılyürek’s book ‘Glafkos Clerides: The Course of a Country’ would certainly be considered a good example.
When I had met Niyazi Kızılyürek a few months ago in Brussels, the book had already been finished. And he was full with an enthusiasm of a journalist who had managed to get a 'scoop'. 'Yes, we visited him at his home by the sea, we talked for hours, for days; he told me things that he did not tell to anyone before. Yes, he is 87 and in a very sound mind. He is bitter with today’s turn of events in Cyprus. Of course, he is pessimistic after the failure of Annan plan. He is bitter, too. In order to assess Clerides you have to check his early years, his background, his upbringing, his studies in England. The book will come out in Greek but you should read it in Turkish. An explosion at a shopping mall in Turkey's capital Ankara on Tuesday killing six people and injuring 56.
According to its Prime Minister, Turkey may launch an attack on Kurdish guerrillas in Iraq, despite likely U.S. opposition. After a bomb killed six people in the capital of Ankara on May 22, many Turkish officials are calling for retaliation against the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which they blame for the attack. The PKK, which has been fighting for Kurdish self-rule in southeastern Turkey since 1984 and is based in the mountains of north Iraq, has denied responsibility for the bomb."

Hundreds of thousands of pro-secular Turks rallied in the Aegean city of Izmir last week, keeping up pressure on the Islamist-rooted government after political turmoil forced early elections in July.

Hundreds showed their support from the sea, sailing along the coast in boats adorned with the red-and-white national flag. Others shouted from rooftops and balconies over roads clogged with buses carrying people from out of town."

Why aren't more moderate Muslims protesting against Islamism? Actually, hundreds of thousands have been doing exactly that, marching in the streets of Turkey's major cities to insist on strict separation of mosque and state.
Turkey is unique. Though its population is 99 percent Muslim, its modern traditions are solidly secular. In recent days, millions of Turks have been as excited as 'American Idol' fans over one of the country's most popular singers, Kenan Dogulu, winning fourth place in the Eurovision song contest. (Accompanied by scantily clad backup singers, Dogulu wowed audiences with his version of 'Shake it Up Shekerim.')"

New Yorker in DC: A Mediterranean Union?
"A Mediterranean Union?
That is the proposal being put forth by the newly elected President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy. The proposed union would consist of sixteen southern European, Middle Eastern and North African countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea: Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Malta, Turkey, Lebanon, Israel, the Palestinian Authority, Egypt, Lybia, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco. The union though primarily economic, would also involve member countries in discussions over controversial issues such as Turkey's EU membership, illegal immigration, counter-terrorism, energy security, the Israel-Palestinian conflict and would provide another forum where Israel and its Arab neighbors could participate together. Sarkozy has said that he wants the countries ringing the Mediterranean to form a council and hold regular summit meetings under a rotating presidency and envisions it as being a bridge between Europe and Muslim world."

Turkish secularism is gravely threatened, and millions of Turks are deeply concerned that their country could become an Islamic state. The secularist Republican People’s Party (CHP) and Democratic Left Party (DSP) have combined forces to try to stop the ruling AK Party, amid widespread fears that the AKP intends to destroy the secular foundation of the Turkish state. Turkey's ban on posters showing women in two-pieces will not stop its emancipated women dressing however they please.
A brief history of the Turkish bikini: nice respectable teenage girls were wearing them in the resorts around Istanbul and Izmir as far back as the 1960s. On "unspoiled" beaches it was not uncommon to attract a mob of staring men in those days, but as more resorts opened up, the bikini followed. By the 1980s, attitudes had relaxed all along the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts. This was partly because so many millions of Turks had spent time as guest workers in Germany, and partly because many more millions now had television, and their favourite programme was the bikini-studded Dallas."
