"Turkish pride Elvan defends 10,000m crown at Ferrara
Turkish long-distance runner Elvan Abeylegesse won the 10,000-meter gold medal at the 11th European Cup in Ferrara, Italy, on Saturday, thus retaining the title she won in 2006. The 24-year-old Ethiopian-born Abeylegesse once again finished first in a 31:25.16 time.
The race got off to a quick start with German Sabrina Mockenhaupt -- the 2005 champion -- and Abeylegesse competing for first place. However, Mockenhaupt threw in the towel at the seventh kilometer, thus allowing Abeylegesse to slow down her pace and glide into first place."
