ISTANBUL, Turkey: Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan received renewed support from the United States for Turkey's EU bid during a phone call Friday with U.S. President George W. Bush, Erdogan's spokesman said.

The EU has threatened to slow down membership negotiations until Turkey opens up to trade with EU member Cyprus, something the Turks have refused to do because of an ongoing dispute over the rights of Turkish Cypriots on the north of the island. An EU leaders summit planned for next week is expected to make a decision on whether to partially freeze membership talks with Turkey."
