brussels • The European Union’s enlargement commissioner appealed to the leaders of France and Germany yesterday not to press for the bloc to set a new deadline for EU candidate Turkey to open its ports to Cyprus.
But a source in French President Jacques Chirac’s office said Chirac and German Chancellor Angela Merkel plan to jointly urge the European Union to set a date for a review of Turkey’s membership bid."
