KAYSERI, Turkey: Turkey must strive to break prejudices in Europe to succeed in joining the European Union, the bloc’s enlargement chief said yesterday on a trip to this deeply conservative central Anatolian town days after the start of membership talks.
After waiting at the gates of the EU for more than 40 years, Turkey began accession talks early Tuesday after EU foreign ministers overcame Austrian objections to offering full membership rather than a special status."
