"COREPER declaration in deadlock

E.U. Ambassadors (COREPER) did not manage to agree on the wording of their response to a Turkish statement that said it does not recognise Cyprus, during their meeting in Brussels yesterday.
As a consequence, discussions on the issue will continue – despite the Union being pressed for time as Ankara is scheduled to open accession negotiations on October 3 and both this statement and the Framework of the Negotiations have to be approved.
Yesterday, the British Presidency presented a third draft counter-declaration with which both Nicosia and Paris had differences, mainly relating to the recognition of Cyprus and mechanisms securing the implementation of the Protocol.
