"Adventures in Turkey:
One journalist marvels at this truly different world
By Rob Terpstra
East meets west is often the phrase used to describe the country of Turkey.
Its founder, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, is worshipped in most, if not all of the country of Türkiye. This is especially true in the city of Izmir, with a congested population of 2.33 million. A traveler cannot go 20 kilometres without seeing the image of the beloved figure. His western philosophy and forward thinking cause his image to continuously be facing to the west.
It is with this mantra that most Turkish inhabitants go about their daily lives. Absent from view are the traditional mosques, women with head scarves and any indication that one is in fact in a country only a border away from deadly war."
