A new plan?

"A new plan?

Rumours surface of a European solution

TURKISH Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said yesterday he hoped to meet UN Secretary-general Kofi Annan soon to discuss the resumption of Cyprus talks, hinting that talks may not be based on the UN plan.

At the same time yesterday, reports surfaced in the Turkish and Turkish Cypriot press about a European alternative to the Annan plan that was rejected by Greek Cypriots in a referendum last April.

Speaking on his return to Ankara from an official visit to Moscow, Erdogan said: 'We want to meet him (Annan) at the first opportunity. No doubt, what will be put forward will not be the current Annan plan.

It is not important whether it is called the Annan plan or something else. The important thing is its content. And that content has to contain a solution. I do not believe that anyone will oppose a plan that contains a solution, he added.

The Turkish Prime Minister has pledged 'courageous steps' in the coming months to achieve a solution in Cyprus. 'We speak of a just and lasting plan that will bring peace to both sides. And we say that we support such a plan and will always do so,' Anatolia quoted him as saying.
Commenting yesterday on Erdogans statements, Foreign Minister George Iacovou said that Ankara has to be seen to make some moves on the Cyprus issue because of its European course. "
