This rich, sprawling show is devoted to an extended exploration - it occupies 11 galleries of the Royal Academy - of Turkish civilisation: where and when it began, and how it spread and developed and re-invented itself over a period of about 1,000 years. The story begins in 600AD, when a people bearing the name of 'Turks' established links with the western Wei of China, and it ends at the beginning of the 17th century with the death of the Ottoman sultan Mehmed III (r.1595-1603)."
