"France's Sarkozy Opposes Turkey Joining EU, Defies Chirac
Jan. 13 (Bloomberg) -- Nicolas Sarkozy, head of French President Jacques Chirac's Union for a Popular Movement party, said he opposed Turkey's bid to join the European Union, countering Chirac's position.
Sarkozy, who resigned as finance minister in November to take over the UMP, said adding the mostly Muslim member would weaken the EU. Chirac said Dec. 15 it would benefit the European bloc to admit Turkey by expanding to the edge of Asia.
``The more numerous we are, the less integrated we are,'' Sarkozy, 49, told journalists in Paris today. ``The less integrated we are, the weaker we are.'' "
