The social geographic map of Istanbul shows the city is divided into two parts with distinct lifestyles and political convictions, said urban expert Professor Murat Güvenç. ‘The AKP’s 16 years in office have not changed the basic dividing line which has been there for 25 years,’ said Güvenç.

Political polarization is visible in Istanbul’s socioeconomic map and it has been there for 25 years, according to urban expert Murat Güvenç.

On June 24th, Turks go to the polls to elect both president and parliament under a new system of governance which has granted the executive branch wide powers over the legislature and judiciary. Muharrem Ince: Erdogan rival kindles opposition hopes – is it enough?
18.06.2018

Muharrem Ince, a 54-year-old firebrand lawmaker from Turkey's staunch secularist camp, has breathed new life into the weary opposition ahead of critical elections, drawing massive crowds to his rallies, coloured with selfies, dances and songs on the stage. Ince uses populist rhetoric as equally effectively as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, promising to end what he calls the "one-man rule" and to tackle economic problems. An animated character, Ince paces the stage, sharply attacking Erdogan in fiery speeches that take aim at the expensive presidential palace and voicing concerns about stubborn unemployment and a decline in democratic norms.

Energized Turkish opposition puts Erdogan in real danger of losing power

ISTANBUL — It was supposed to be an easy win.

A prolonged state of emergency after a failed coup attempt and a constitutional referendum that delivered Turkey’s president sweeping new powers should deliver strongman President Recep Tayyip Erdogan an easy win in Turkey’s June 24 snap elections, a vote moved up from November 2019.

With a week to go to crucial Turkish elections, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his main rival Muharrem Ince are trading blows in an unexpectedly bruising fight to win control of the country.

Erdogan prides himself on his formidable campaigning skills but Ince, a fiery orator from the left of the secular Republican People’s Party (CHP), has shown he can match the president’s famed charisma and rhetoric.

As the clock ticks down to the June 24 polls, the pair are holding several rallies daily, often visiting the same key battleground town within days of each other in what now appears to be the biggest ballot box challenge of Erdogan’s career.

Could Erdogan actually be voted out in Turkey?

Turkey’s next round of elections is coming up in just over a week, on June 24th. Considering that the Turks are currently living under a barely disguised dictatorship in the form of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, one might imagine that the elections will be little more than a formality. But in an unusual bit of media digging, Bloomberg commissioned a poll of Turkish voters to evaluate the chances of both Erdogan and his AKP Party. The conclusion? Erdogan is holding a lead, but it’s not as big as you might imagine and his nearest challenger could be within the margin of error for an upset victory.
