If I learned one thing from my trip to Istanbul it was this: Avoid full meals. Amazing food is around every corner. So if you polish off a scrumptious grilled lamb kebab for lunch, when you pass a window filled with bright, glistening vegetables and savory meats you'll have instant buyer's remorse. Luckily, Istanbul lends itself to grazing, as lunches and dinners are often served meze style, on small plates brought out incrementally throughout a meal.

Who could have imagined that one day pedestrians in Istanbul’s most artistic and liberal neighborhood of Cihangir would stumble upon a massive wall of graffiti that read, simply and terrifyingly, “Exterminate all Kurds”? That day came earlier this month. Something has happened in Turkey that has made racism, once again, an everyday occurrence. Yet there are concrete steps that can be taken to halt a seemingly endless cycle of hatred.

Turkey seems to be ready to lead the mission in Syria. The government has hesitated to take a stand against Assad, when the opposition rallies first started last spring in Syria. At the time, most of the ex-Islamist writers opposed to the idea of confrontation with Syria and defined it as a trap of the imperialists to “divide and rule” the Muslim world.

Iraqi transportation ministry spokesman Karim al-Nuri said the decision to block Turkish planes from Iraq, including the semi-autonomous Kurdish region, was in response to a similar ban in Turkey against Iraqi flights. However, a Turkish government official denied that Ankara blocked Iraqi planes.

'Patriotic duty' may no longer be mandatory for Turkey's men

ISTANBUL // A term of "patriotic duty", as the mandatory military service for every male is called in Turkey, has been a fact of life for millions in this country for decades. A well-known saying even states that "every Turk is born a soldier".
But this is about to change. The government in Ankara says it is working on two separate reforms that, if enacted, could decisively reduce the military's role in many people's lives.
