What's in a date? If you're Turkish, plenty - The National Newspaper

"What's in a date? If you're Turkish, plenty

ISTANBUL // Everyone knows what “9/11” stands for, but when it comes to having dates speak for momentous events in history, it is hard to beat the Turks. In Istanbul, it is not unusual to have a long and earnest political debate in which phrases like “February 28”, “April 27”, “July 22” or “September 12” are used with an ease and an abundance that can throw novices to Turkey’s political scene into utter confusion."

Salute to Turkey cooks up cool connection for Memphis

"Salute to Turkey cooks up cool connection for Memphis

Turkey, Beale St. and barbecue are three names that seem an unlikely combination, but the Beale St. Music Festival and the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest—as part of the Memphis in May Salute to Turkey—provide a fortuitous connection. The annual tribute to another country acknowledges that nations are ever more interdependent in many areas, not the least of which is respecting diversity and being good stewards of the land, sea and sky."

Standoff between Turkish gov't and judiciary could spark a crisis

"Standoff between Turkish gov't and judiciary could spark a crisis

IIncreasing tension between Turkey's Islamist-rooted AKP government and the judiciary could turn into a crisis, commentators and analysts warn on Thursday. Turkey's Supreme Court said Wednesday "the independence of the judiciary can not be digested," and criticized the government for meddling in the judiciary and attempt to create a "judiciary controlled by an executive body." The AKP slammed this harsh statement, saying it cannot be accepted. In a move to soothe concerns Turkish president signaled he could step in to resolve the conflict. "

Near East Update: Islam: Forwardization vs. Modernization

"Islam: Forwardization vs. Modernization

The political party of conservative Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has sponsored a three year project to systematically review 162,000 hadith reports and narrow them down to 10,000 with the goal of 'separating original Islam from the accretions of 14 centuries' (story). The hadith is commonly known to be the collection of sayings from the prophet Mohammed which, for centuries, have supplemented and informed the Muslim's reading of the Quran. The news of this project is no new news at all. Months ago, BBC reported on the same announcement, which I followed up with a piece, asking if this move by the Turkish government is equatable with Europe's Protestant Reformation (post)."
