"Fine-tuning anti-terrorism
M.Ali BIRAND
Europeans fight terrorism and no one says anything. When Turkey initiates a similar fight against terrorism with approximately the same laws, all hell breaks loose. This difference in attitude in based partially on double standards and partially on the careless way we implement our laws and the mistakes we make. "

Erdogan to visit EU countries to push for accession talks
"Erdogan to visit EU countries to push for accession talks
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, along with Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, and State Minister for the Economy and Turkey’s chief European Union negotiator Ali Babacan will visit leading EU countries in September to rally support ahead of Ankara's accession talks planned for October 3. During their meetings, Erdogan, Gul and Babacan are expected to separately reiterate that there are no obstacles to Turkey beginning its talks since it had met all the conditions.
Stress will be put on the fact that recognition of Greek Cyprus shouldn’t be a precondition to begin talks and that there can be no recognition before a resolution is reached on the island. In related news, Erdogan and Gul are expected to attend a summit of UN heads of state and government, set to be held in New York on September 14-16."

Philip Gordon's article "Cyprus is a poor excuse for turning away Turkey" (Views, Aug. 18) is very much biased. The Republic of Cyprus, and not the "Greek Cypriot" government, became a full member of the EU in May 2004, having all the rights of EU membership. That a candidate country, Turkey, is unwilling to recognize a member state of a club that it wants to join is beyond logic."

ANKARA, Aug 23 (Reuters) - Turkey's top security body, the MGK, said on Tuesday it was determined to fight 'terror', in an apparent rebuff to a ceasefire call from banned Kurdish separatist group the PKK.
'The MGK reiterated its determination to fight terror which targets our citizens' right to life, security, peace and welfare,' the council said in a statement after a meeting.
The PKK called last week on its armed wing to refrain from violence for a month from Aug. 20, after Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan made a trip to the troubled southeast during which he said his government wanted more reforms for the Kurds."

"An Improbable War and Turkey's New Opportunities
"We want dialogue with the U.S., not war," says Turkish author Burak Turna. "We have written this book to prevent a war."
The book of which Turna speaks, Metal Firtina ("Metal Storm" in Turkish) has become a runaway bestseller in Turkey over the past couple months. A thriller in the style of Tom Clancy, the novel (by Turkish authors Turna and Orkun Uçar) has been attacked for its alleged anti-American elements and conspiracy theorizing. The plot describes how a flare-up between Turkish and American troops in northern Iraq leads to an out-and-out war, resulting in the American bombing of Istanbul and Ankara and a Turkish detonation of a nuclear bomb in Washington in response."
