Turkey’s annual consumer price inflation rate stayed on the decline in December, falling to 20.3% y/y from 21.61% y/y in November, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) announced on January 3.
The further reduction in inflation was anticipated given the impact of tax cuts on consumer goods, voluntary private sector discounts “encouraged” by the government targeting certain items in TUIK’s inflation basket, the partial recovery of the Turkish lira (TRY) and falling oil prices. A Reuters poll had predicted the annual headline figure for the last month of the year would be 20.52%.

A total of 540 university graduate Turks applied for jobs in the Netherlands in 2016, with this number rising to 1020 in the first 11 months of 2018, it said.

President Donald Trump’s December 19, 2018 decision to withdraw US troops from Syria received a euphoric response in Turkey. That was not surprising since the US military presence and support for the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) and its armed wing the People’s Protection Unit (YPG) has been a source of friction between Washington and Ankara. A week before the US announcement, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had threatened to launch a military operation in northern Syria to decimate the YPG, which Turkey considers a terrorist organization. In fact, on December 17, Erdogan had said that Turkey is ready to launch an operation “at any moment” to take control of Manbij, a city in northern Syria currently under the control of the US-supported Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). He had also claimed that Trump has given a “positive response” to this Turkish plan.

ANKARA A total of 13 political parties will compete in Turkey’s forthcoming local elections scheduled for March 31, the country’s election authority announced on Wednesday. In a statement, the Supreme Election Council said 13 parties could meet the necessary criteria to run on the ballot. Turkish local polls are held every five years to elect mayors of 30 metropolitan municipalities and 51 provincial municipalities. Ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party and opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) are expected to support each other’s candidates in some districts and provinces, while the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) and the Good (IYI) Party are expected to make same arrangement.
