Interview: How Turkey’s Failure to Protect Women Can Cost Them Their Lives
According to the most recent official data, around four out of ten women in Turkey have suffered physical and/or sexual violence during their lives. Hundreds are murdered by their partners every year, even though in some cases they had reported their abusers to authorities more than once. In some cases, their deaths could possibly have been prevented, had the authorities made sure that restraining orders were respected, breaches punished, and perpetrators prosecuted, according to a new Human Rights Watch report, “Combatting Domestic Violence in Turkey: The Deadly Impact of Failure to Protect.”

Why Sweden’s stance on Kurds riles turkey’s Erdogan
By NICLAS ROLANDER, OTT UMMELAS
BLOOMBERG • May 18, 2022
At the heart of Turkey’s threat to stop NATO’s Nordic expansion is a clash of viewpoints over Kurdish political groups.
Sweden, which along with Finland is seeking entry into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, has been one of Europe’s most willing recipients of migrants fleeing conflict, including Kurds. Turkey opposes Kurdish demands for statehood and its president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has called Sweden a “nesting ground for terrorist organizations.” Since NATO admits new members only by unanimous consent, his views can’t easily be ignored.

In Turkey, anger is mounting against Syrian refugees
May 13, 2022 by
We are in 2043. Second-class citizens, the Turks are confined to subordinate positions by their Syrian bosses; they are forced to speak Arabic and they are abused in the streets. The Silent Invasion, a short film released on May 3 on social networks and viewed by millions of people, has set the Turkish Internet on fire. The author, who raises the specter of a sort of Turkish-style “great replacement” theory, is Ümit Özdag, the leader of a new far-right formation, the Victory Party (Zafer).
