Reihan Salam: What Syria’s fall means for Turkey’s rise
ISTANBUL — It’s rare that I enjoy being stuck in traffic, but the slow ride from Istanbul’s main international airport to its central business district is a feast for the eyes. New shopping malls, apartment blocks, and office parks seem to stretch out in every direction, up and down the city’s formidable hills. But this week has served as a reminder that Turkey’s prosperity rests on a fragile foundation.

Residents of Istanbul Neighborhood Take A Colorful Stand
By David Leveille ⋅ September 4, 2013 ⋅ Post a comment
We’re looking for the name of a historic neighborhood in Istanbul for our Geo Quiz.
It’s right near Taksim Square, the scene of violent demonstrations a few months back. Young and liberal Turks took to the streets to protest the autocratic tendencies of Turkey’s ruling party.
This nearby neighborhood is in the news again. A 62-year-old retiree named Huseyin Centinel was inspired to freshen up a drab set of stairs. He spent 4 days and $800 of his own money to paint the stairs lime green and sky blue, to splash some bright colors on just “to make people smile.”

Individual Freedoms in Turkey
Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has witnessed economic success and launched major reforms, in particular writing a new constitution, negotiating with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, passing four judicial reform packages, and installing an ombudsman. In sharp contrast, the AKP’s exclusive reliance on its election victories for legitimacy and increasingly authoritarian practices in the fields of freedom of cultural expression and coexistence of different lifestyles are at odds with its stated objective of establishing an advanced democracy. Popular discontent with these practices and unending restrictions on media freedom resulted in major protests in May and June 2013

Why does Turkey support intervention in Syria?
Saturday, 31 August 2013
Ceylan Ozbudak
In recent days the world has seen rulers overthrown, governments elected, embattled and deposed by the tumult of the Arab peoples. Turkey meanwhile, rocking and tossing in the waves, has been a great ship of state. While the Arab peoples are going through these changes, Turkey is a model of moderation and mediation throughout the Mediterranean, in cooperation with Europe, and the United States. Still ahead of the world’s GDP growth in the last decade and a bit behind the emerging markets, compared to any advanced countries Turkey did really well and the perception from the West is now different.
