Ramadan’s final week prompts reflections from Istanbul
August 5 2013 by Madeline Arthington, Baptist Press

(EDITOR’S NOTE: As Ramadan, the annual Islamic month of fasting, enters its final week, IMB writer Madeline Arthington shares her hope that Muslim friends will one day celebrate with her before Christ, the Lamb of God.)

ISTANBUL (BP) – “This reminds me of a fusion of the Fourth of July in Washington, D.C., and a carnival,” I thought as I looked out at the thousands of families and groups of friends spreading picnic blankets on the grass and unpacking carefully prepared packages of dinner. Others possessively claimed a limited supply of picnic tables.

How Far Will Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan Go to Stay in Power? : The New Yorker

The Deep State

The Prime Minister is revered as a moderate, but how far will he go to stay in power?

by Dexter Filkins

Not long ago, at a resort in the Turkish town of Kızılcahamam, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stood before a gathering of leaders of the Justice and Development Party to celebrate both his country and himself. Erdoğan, a tall, athletic-looking man of fifty-eight, with a receding hairline and a pale mustache, wore a blue Western suit and no tie. His wife, Emine, wearing a traditional head scarf, looked on from a nearby seat. Erdoğan recalled the milestones in Turkey’s remarkable economic and geopolitical ascent since 2002, and the rise to power of the A.K. Party, as it is known by its Turkish initials. He pointed to the doubling of the gross domestic product; the sweeping transformation of the Turkish state and society; and the leading role that Turkey has come to play in world affairs. “With the A.K. Party, the whole world hears Turkey’s words,” Erdoğan said.

Ergenekon Verdicts: Erdogan Silences Dissent in Divided Turkey

By Hasnain Kazim in Istanbul

A Turkish court on Monday announced verdicts and long prison sentences for dozens of defendants in the so-called 'Ergenekon' plot to overthrow the government. The rulings expose how uncertain and divided the country is.

Ergenekon is the name of a valley in the east of Turkey. Legend has it that the few Turks who survived a disastrous defeat fled there, grew into a strong nation and emerged under the leadership of a gray wolf to found a great empire. Many secular nationalists like the story. The wolf is their emblem.

Yedikule: An Istanbul Neighborhood’s Bitter Harvest
August 5, 2013, by Istanbul Eats, Comments 1

Foreigners living in Istanbul often say they love the place for its history, while some say it’s the people who make it special. We find life here mystifying for the unpredictable dialogue between the two, the way 15 million or so people reconcile their daily lives with this city’s rich past. To live inside this beautiful crash course is invigorating and, at the same time, a heartbreaking experience. Where else does the elegant silhouette of migratory storks cross a skyline of construction cranes busy laying a metro tube to connect two continents, a project whose progress was stalled by the unexpected discovery of one of the richest underwater archaeological finds ever, a lost port full of ancient boats filled with age-old cargo? Walking these streets, every day we see something so fabulous that it takes our breath away, just as we spot something around the corner threatening to smash it.

Press freedom in Turkey has suffered greatly in the past decade for several reasons related to government policies. By: Yavuz Baydar for Al-Monitor Turkey Pulse Posted on August 2.

Turkey’s bleeding media is drifting fast into an abyss, which may soon become the final resting place of free and independent journalism in Turkey. The crisis at the Milliyet daily, a major hallmark in the Turkish press, deepened this week as editor-in-chief Derya Sazak resigned and columnist Can Dundar was fired in a phone call by the daily’s owner himself. The turmoil at Milliyet had boiled over earlier this year when veteran journalist Hasan Cemal was forced to quit after he criticized Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the media establishment. Fears are rife that the political “cleansing” at the paper will extend to other writers.

The media in Turkey

The debate over the media in Turkey is, to a great extent, shaped by the power-media dichotomy – as it should be. In fact, it is impossible to comprehend the media problematique in Turkey without taking a snapshot of power-media relations. When the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) came to power, both the media sector and the power-media relations embarked on a new chapter.

From the Potomac to the Euphrates » Turkey’s Tendency Toward Grandiosity

Turkey’s Tendency Toward Grandiosity

by Guest Blogger for Steven A. Cook
August 1, 2013

Aaron Stein has argued in these pages that the AKP’s foreign policy is underlined by more realism than idealism. Certainly the party has crafted different policies toward different Arab states. But there’s a larger process at work here that runs deeper than the AKP, and that is the Turkish state’s tendency to think of foreign policy in large, grandiose frameworks conditioned on Turkish leadership. This preference of over-hyping Turkey’s importance has led to short-sighted policies, an inability to anticipate regional and, especially, domestic changes in other countries, and a rigidity that precludes quick enough adaption to these changes.

Secret Thatcher Notes: Kohl Wanted Half of Turks Out of Germany

By Claus Hecking

Unsealed confidential British documents reveal that in 1982, German Chancellor Helmut Kohl tried to carry out a radical plan. He wanted to reduce the number of Turks living in Germany by 50 percent within four years.

"SECRET," the top of the densely typewritten document reads. Underneath, an official had added a handwritten note: "NOT FOR DISTRIBUTION."

ANZEIGE
It was a controversial plan that the newly elected German chancellor, Helmut Kohl, confided to British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher during her visit to Bonn, then the West German capital. "Chancellor Kohl said (...) over the next four years, it would be necessary to reduce the number of Turks in Germany by 50 percent -- but he could not say this publicly yet," state the secret minutes of the meeting dated Oct. 28, 1982.

The fall and fall of the Turkish Empire

Why, the careful observer should ask, did the crowds in Istanbul, which gathered to protest the coup d’etat in Cairo, repeatedly chant “Allah-u aqbar (God is greatest)?” What does God’s greatness have to do with a coup in an Arab country? Why did the same crowds not protest the 1989 coup in Sudan, or the 1980 coup in Turkey? Does God have a different perspective on Egyptian, Turkish and Sudanese coups?
