JTW - Turkish Chilli : The new, politically influenced meanings for regular Turkish words
Once in the coffee houses (kahvehane in Turkish) or in drunk yards (meyhane), the general discussions were around football, women and politics. Now in cities people are discussing about messenger programs, virus problems and web sites. Even those who are not friendly with internet terminology refer to internet news sites more than newspapers. It is not only Turks experiencing this change, I know, but my concern is generally my fellow citizens, Turks.
Not only technology but also the political turmoil happening in and around Turkey is effecting our daily conversations and terminologies. Time to time, the international problems transform the every day words, Turks use. These new and witty meanings for everyday words inspired by boring international events may make everyone smile a bit, I hope. "

Focus English News-The Birth of “EU Light”
6 April 2006 | 21:36
Der Standard
Romania and Bulgaria will become the first EU member states that have more limited rights. It doesn’t matter when exactly they will join the EU – in 2007 or 2008, because behind the numerous formulations and safeguard clauses about the shortening of certain deadlines under the accession treaty, there is a simple exclusion of EU member states from the market of agrarian products or the economic “core” of the union, from the common market and the related right of votes – by the time the countries implement the EU membership criteria. With a view to that, the EU will have to give up the idea that it is a union of states with equal rights and obligations, in which the full-fledged membership is a priority of the states. A state that has joined the EU gives the European Commission, the European Council and the European Parliament governing opportunities, and the thought that the attempt at implementing even a project of a larger scale, such as the accession of Turkey, is becoming more and more clearer. In the meantime, the so-called “EU Light” is a step backwards from the political union toward the direction of a more liberalized economic cooperation."

Yuri Nabiyev: Prospects of Kurdish Statehood - Russian News - REGNUM
The collapse of the Ottoman Empire in 1918 was a unique chance for the Kurds to create their own state, at least, under the protectorate of the League of Nations, or, why not, the Entente. As you may know, articles 62 and 65 of the Treaty of Sevres provided for Kurdistan’s independence. But they missed that chance because of the selfsame archaism of their society.
I can’t say the Kurds did not fight for independence. The ideas of a nation’s self-determination right, officially proclaimed and partly realized by the Entente, and the Russian revolution, taken in Kurdistan as an attempt to create a new fair world system – had impressed the Kurds a lot. In 1920 the Mosul villayet, i.e. the present-day Iraqi Kurdistan, was in the flame of never-ending revolts: Sheik Mahmud Barzanji proclaimed himself as the King of Kurdistan in Sulaymaniya. He did it twice and once (1921) was even half-recognized by the British government. A similar attempt was made by the leader of the Iranian Kurds Ismail Aga Simko. But their tribal movements were doomed to failure. For the US the Kurds are the best ally in its concept to democratize the Middle East, and this regards not only Iraq, but also Iran, Syria and Turkey. So, today the US and the Kurds are building their relations on mutual benefit and, given the situation in Iran and Syria and the Kurds’ importance in Iraq, the US is strongly interested in the Kurds just as the Kurds are in the US – for they are using their relations with the US for solving their own national tasks. In any case, things will stay like that till late 2007 – for as long as the Bush Republican administration is in power. The Kurds know that, and no coincidence they insist on solving the problem of Kirkuk by the end of 2007.
These days the Kurdish cause is as acutely pressing as never before. There are many proofs of this. One proof is the news reports of just one day Apr 1 2006:
* The US administration is preparing President Bush’s meeting with representatives of the Kurdish political parties of Syria
* A national revolt is underway in Turkey. The officials of the EU, which Turkey is so much eager to join, make numerous calls for that country to solve the Kurdish problem
* Two satellite TV programs launched for Iranian Kurds

In recent weeks there have been signs of a growing mood of nationalism in the Turkish Government. Just over ten days ago Prime Minister Erdogan warned that Turkey would not discuss certain educational and cultural matters as a part of its accession process. He then risked opening up a new rift with Greece by rebuking Athens over its treatment of the Muslim minority in Western Thrace -- this less than two years after he praised Greece on the very same issue. Meanwhile, his administration continues to insist that it will not open its ports to Cypriots ships and aircraft, despite repeated demands to do so by EU officials."

The Turkish prime minister's political maneuver of boycotting a scheduled joint news conference with his Danish counterpart Anders Fogh Rasmussen in Copenhagen to protest the presence of a Roj-TV journalist there, again last year, added further fuel to the issue and brought it to the very top of issues addressed by the Turkish public. TDN editorial by Yusuf KANLI
We Turks like to say there is not much different in the general behavioral patterns of Turks, Italians, Greeks and other nations of the Mediterranean basin.
Indeed, this national comparison hypothesis may have some relevance, but what is definite is that we have not much in common with today's people of Greece or Italy. The similarity we have with Italy was the Italy of, let's say, the 1940s and 1950s, when chauvinism and nationalism were credible currency, or in the 1980s and 1990s, when some deep dark forces were almost sovereign in that country. Our similarity with Greece was more with the Greece of the 1960s and 1970s, when military dominance in politics was the rule of the game."

The New Anatolian-Talks in Parliament signal hard road ahead for Kurdish issue
Sedat Bozkurt
The declarations in Parliament's session on terror, made by various politicians from different parts of the political spectrum, show that the Kurdish question in Turkey has entered a phase which is even more difficult than its past thorny path.
Reading between the lines, the debate in Parliament Tuesday also demonstrated that the Kurdish problem, which had always been left in the shadow of terrorism, has made little progress over the last few years."

NPR : American and Turkish Journalism -- a Comparison
NPR.org, April 5, 2006 · Hundreds of foreign journalists visit the United States each year at the invitation of the State Department. They visit a variety of newsrooms, meet their American counterparts and see for themselves how our journalism works in Washington, D.C., and in other parts of the country.
Last week, five American journalists and academics (including me), were invited to return the favor by going to Turkey to meet with journalists in Istanbul and Ankara. The Turkish journalists we met came from all sides of the political and media spectrum – everything from a pro-government Islamist daily called Yeni Safak to a very familiar-looking all-news television channel known as CNN Turk."

Financial Mirror-Greek FM urges Turkey to implement obligations on Cyprus
05/04/2006
www.financialmirror.com
Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyiannis called on Turkey Wednesday to fulfill its obligations towards the European Union and join the United Nations technical committees that will investigate new ways to resolve the Cyprus problem.
Speaking after her meeting in Nicosia with Cyprus Foreign Minister George Iacovou, Bakoyiannis repeated the statement made by Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn that Turkey has undertaken a commitment to implement the Ankara Protocol.
'This is what the EU expects from Turkey. It is therefore important for this aim to be achieved, that Turkey comes closer to the EU,' Bakoyiannis said.
The main obstacle at present is Turkey’s refusal to open up its ports and airports to Cypriot vessels and aircraft, bargaining in exchange for a better financial deal for Turkish Cypriots living in the north of the island, including their right to trade freely with the outer world.
The Greek Foreign Minister said she was optimistic that the pro-European forces in Turkey will prevail."

THURSDAY, APRIL 6, 2006
DIYARBAKIR, Turkey Violent clashes between Kurds and security forces reignited in Turkey over the last week, jolting memories here back to an old problem that still stands as a dangerous block on the nation's path toward greater prosperity and democracy.
After a decade of calm, at least 20 people were killed in protests, most in the guerrilla battleground of the Kurdish southeast but also in cosmopolitan Istanbul. Among the dead were a 6- year-old boy and a 78-year-old man, Halit Sogut, whose relatives asked on Tuesday how this was still possible in a nation that saw its rightful place in the European Union."

The Anatolia Times-Wilson Says P.K.K. Problem Should Be Resolved
ISTANBUL - U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Ross Wilson said on Tuesday that the United States did not want Turkey to be troubled by the terrorist organization PKK, adding that the PKK problem should be resolved.
Speaking at a luncheon hosted by Turkish-American Businessmen's Association (TABA-AmCham) in Istanbul, Wilson said that the terrorist organization PKK could not shelter in Iraq for a long time after formation of a powerful central government in Baghdad.
He noted that the United States had been cooperating with Turkey to halt financial resources of the terrorist organization.
Upon a question about the visit of Hamas leaders to Turkey in February, Wilson said that many U.S. congressmen expressed anger and concern about the visit. He noted that the visit disappointed many U.S. politicians.
Replying to a question about Iran, Wilson said that an international consensus should be created to prevent Iran from maintaining its nuclear efforts.
Wilson extended the United States' support to Turkey's EU process, and highlighted importance of Turkish government's completing economic and political reforms with determination."

Ambassadors of Baltic States to Turkey meet with Turkey's Minister of National Defence and Commander-in-Chief of Turkish Armed forces
On 4 April 2006, the Ambassadors of Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania to Turkey (Ivars Pundurs, Markt Volmer and Vitautas Nauduzas), met with Turkey's Minister of National Defence Vecdi Gonul and the Commander-in-Chief of the Turkish Armed forces, General Hilmi Özkök, to thank them for the decision of the Turkish government to take over the NATO air patrolling mission in the Baltic States as from 1 April.
At the meeting, the ambassadors noted that the air-patrolling mission is a visible acknowledgement of membership of Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania in NATO, thus promoting Baltic States security. The officials discussed options for air patrolling in Baltic air space after 2007.
The ambassadors thanked Turkey for its support during the Baltic States' accession to NATO, expressed their support to Turkey's accession to the European Union, and proposed to continue sharing their experience of EU accession talks.
The Turkish officials said they were pleased at the visit of the Ambassadors of Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania, and their expression of gratitude. Turkish Defence Minister Vecdi Gonul emphasized that Turkey had never recognised annexation of the Baltic States and had supported their membership of NATO.
The Turkish officials invited officers and soldiers of the Baltic States to make use of a training centre and NATO schools in Turkey to improve their knowledge and skills.

ISTANBUL: The Iranian ambassador to Ankara urged Turkey, Iran and Syria to form a joint policy on the Kurdish issue, saying in an interview published on Tuesday that if they did not, “the US will carve pieces from us for a Kurdish state.”
Turkey, Syria and Iran share borders and have large Kurdish populations that separatist militants would like to see as part of an independent Kurdish state. Turkey in particular fears such a scenario, and has been roiled in the past week by anti-state Kurdish riots that have left 15 dead and hundreds injured. "

Property sales in north slump over court case fears
By Simon Bahceli
PROPERTY sales in the north have hit an all time low, estate agents said yesterday, despite claims on Monday by Turkish Cypriot ‘prime minister’ Ferdi Sabit Soyer that the property boom continued unabated.
“I haven’t sold a single property in a year,” Kyrenia-based estate agent Altan Ozcihangirli told the Cyprus Mail yesterday, adding that others in the industry were experiencing a similar slump in sales.
Ozcihangirli said he believed the bottom had fallen out of the property market as a direct result of several court cases pending against those who had invested in properties abandoned by Greek Cypriots in the wake of the Turkish invasion in 1974. "

Most Greek Cypriots ‘don’t want to live with Turkish Cypriots’
By John Leonidou
DESPITE the vast majority of Greek Cypriots theoretically remaining in favour of a united Cyprus, 48 per cent of them are against the idea of living side by side with Turkish Cypriots.
According to a survey conducted by the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC), 48 per cent of those asked said they would choose to live separately from Turkish Cypriots, to 45 per cent opting for co-existence. More worrying still, the vast majority of Greek Cypriots under the age of 35 are against the idea of living with their Turkish Cypriot neighbours – a result which casts considerable doubt over how willing Greek Cypriots are to rejoin Turkish Cypriots on a united island.
The study revealed that 63 per cent of Greek Cypriots within the age group of 18 to 24 are against the idea of living with Turkish Cypriots, while for the age group 25 to 34, 59 per cent are against the idea."
