Erdoğan Calls Early Election Ahead of Tight Leadership Challenge

Turkey’s President Erdoğan has called elections for the 14th of May, a month earlier than was previously scheduled. He announced this decision at a youth conference in the province of Bursa, attributing the change to a desire to avoid holding elections during the June holidays. European as well as American commentators speculate however that the change in date is politically motivated, and that the given reason is disingenuous. Poor polling suggests Erdoğan could have a number of motivations for accelerating the elections, both legal and political.

Turkey could be on the brink of dictatorship
President Erdogan could tip his country over the edge
Jan 19th 2023
Turkey has nato’s second-biggest armed forces. It plays a crucial role in a turbulent neighbourhood, especially in war-scorched Syria. It exerts growing influence in the western Balkans, in the eastern Mediterranean and more recently in Africa. Above all, it is important in the Black Sea and in Russia’s war in Ukraine; last year it helped broker a deal to let more Ukrainian grain be shipped to a hungry world.

Ankara (AFP) – President Recep Tayyip Erdogan hinted Wednesday that he would bring the date of Turkey's most consequential election in generations forward to May 14 in a bid to catch his rivals off guard.
The announcement sets the stage for a vote that could either extend Erdogan's Islamic style of rule into a third decade or turn the country on a sharply more secular -- and potentially predictable -- course.

Commonly regarded as the “birth certificate” of modern Turkey, the 1923 treaty of Lausanne was the last of the peace settlements signed at the end of the first world war. This year’s centenary has already provoked far more public anticipation than one might expect, thanks to widespread belief in conspiracy theories.

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson on Friday denounced a protest by Kurds in central Stockholm, where an effigy of Turkey’s president was hung from a lamppost, as an act of “sabotage” against Sweden’s bid to join NATO.
The protest outside City Hall on Wednesday drew an angry backlash from Turkey, a NATO member which already had held off on approving Sweden’s application to become part of the Western military alliance until the government in Stockholm satisfies its demands.
