Turkey's tourism renaissance - Al-Monitor: the Pulse of the Middle East
Turkey's tourism renaissance
Revitalizing Turkey’s tourism sector was one of the major achievements of late Prime Minister Turgut Ozal, the man who dominated Turkish politics in the 1980s. Ozal, who would often make public appearances clad in shorts and a T-shirt, sped up investment in the tourism sector at a time when Turkey was toiling to sustain its fragile economy, unaware that its natural beauty, history, sea and sunshine could be also marketed. Driven by the build-operate-transfer model and lucrative incentives, five-star hotels and holiday villages sprang up on Turkey’s coasts. “Industry without chimneys” became the memorable slogan of the sector.

Erdogan's Grand Construction Projects Are Tearing Istanbul Apart
Erdogan's Grand Construction Projects Are Tearing Istanbul Apart
By Alexander Christie-Miller / July 31, 2014 10:28 AM EDT
Late one night in the maze of wooden houses beneath Istanbul’s ancient city walls, an old man rose from his bed, scrawled a suicide note, and gulped down a bottle of pesticide. For months Ismet Hezer had watched his neighbours in the close-knit neighbourhood of Tokludede crumble under intense pressure to sell their homes, which were earmarked to be demolished as part of an ‘urban renewal’ scheme. Residents had been kicked out, and others had sold up at knockdown prices to government-linked developers who told them they would otherwise be nationalised.

Turkey at the tipping point?
Thursday, 31 July 2014
Upcoming elections in Turkey (the first round is scheduled for August 10th) will likely see current premier Recep Tayyip Erdoğan (who has led the country as premier for the last 12 years) assume the presidency. What might happen once he takes on the presidential mantle? No one in the country will go on the record in commenting on the election and its possible aftermath. It is certainly a tipping point in the country’s outlook.

We were looking for ice for the boat that took us from the Aegean town of Ayvalık, to the Greek island of Lesbos, and coming from Istanbul, one of the newly rising capitals of the “wild, wild east,” where doing something without expecting anything in return is becoming a rarity, Stavros’ answer deeply impressed us.

After three years of civil war on its northern border, Turkey is being increasingly confronted by regional violence and a growing influx of Syrian refugees. Ankara’s policy toward Islamist rebels and its border policy have come under criticism amid a tense domestic atmosphere. Reformulating these aspects of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s Syria policy is key to easing the Syrian crisis’ strains on Turkey and responding to growing domestic concerns about the prime minister’s policies.

Syrian refugees test tolerance in Turkish cities
The first Syrian refugees to enter Turkey started to cross the border in April 2011. Their plight was not fully known back then, but the expectations were that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his regime would be deposed in six months to a year, and that the refugees would all soon go back to their homes. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan promised them the borders would remain open for those who escaped to safety in Turkey without taking into consideration whether they had their passports or proof of identification with them. Since then it has been three years, and the number of Syrians in Turkey is now estimated to be around 1,500,000.

A Turkish Town Where Baklava Beckons
The first thing you notice among passengers departing from Oguzeli Airport in Gaziantep, Turkey, is the profusion of shopping bags containing baklava, the intensely sweet Middle Eastern phyllo pastry and nut confection that is a staple of every Turkish celebration. This city of about a million people, in the province of the same name and situated on the Silk Road about 530 miles southeast of Istanbul, claims some 100 baklava shops, which supply 90 percent of the baklava consumed in Turkey. Last December, Gaziantep baklava, which is made with locally grown pistachio nuts, was awarded “protected status” by the European Union, a designation that recognizes a specific local food, protects it from imitators and potentially helps boost tourism to the area.

The Cyprus issue: 40 years' resolution and the matter of natural gas
Published time: July 24, 2014 11:05
Last Sunday, 20 July 2014, marked the 40th anniversary of Turkey's direct involvement on the island of Cyprus.
The so-called Attila-1 offensive was a military intervention aimed at bringing a halt to a bloody operation of "ethnic cleansing" (though the term still had to be invented at the time) which was targeting the Turkish population of the island. The Turkish Armed Forces subsequently occupied a fair share of the island's territory (37 percent), an area that was turned into the so-called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) in 1983 – a mini-state that has only been recognized by the Republic of Turkey.

Turkey’s trade deficit is growing from its lack of oil and gas, which is largely imported (over 90 percent) from Russia and Iran. The latest figures show that value of energy imported to Turkey in 2013 reached $55.9 billion, which makes up about 22.2 percent of the total imports and about 56 percent of the total trade deficit of the country. Were Turkey to find alternative energy sources, it could substantially slash its energy bills.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has left nothing more to be said against Israel: “[Israelis] have no conscience, no honor, no pride,” he said July 19 during a rally in the Black Sea city of Ordu. “Those who condemn Hitler — day and night — have surpassed Hitler in barbarism.” The day before in Bursa, a city on the coastline of the Marmara Sea, he also had this to say: “World leaders are making weird statements. They say Israel is using its right of self-defense. What kind of a self-defense is this that it is only the Palestinians to die? It is all a game. We face a new crusader alliance.”

The Turco-Egyptian feud and the Palestinian crisis
The Turco-Egyptian feud and the Palestinian crisis
July 20, 2014, Sunday/ 16:20:18/ GÖKHAN BACIK
The rise of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi as the mediator between Israel and Hamas created a kind of allergy in Ankara.
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said, “What does he [Sisi] have to do with peace? He is a tyrant.” Apparently, the feud between Turkey and Egypt goes even deeper than the humanitarian crisis of the Palestinians. Even the bodies of killed Palestinian children fail to force Turkey and Egypt to forget their bilateral problems. This is, thus, a modern feud in every sense. Like other historical examples, this feud will generate hate, tension and indeed, its own long-term legacy.
