"EU should welcome Turkish accession
Martin Kettle's article on Turkish membership of the EU (Disgracefully, Turkey's EU accession bid is going nowhere soon, 29 October) is timely and prescient. I have been researching young people's views of Europe in Turkey over the last few months, and can see their frustration building up at an alarming rate. Turkey has been invited to prepare itself for accession, and has since made great strides in developing civil liberties. Most of the young people I've spoken with express both confidence in their country's social development and in their orientation towards Europe. Their attitudes towards diversity in the population are inclusive to a degree that would not have been thought possible 10 years ago. And they are certainly not expressing any desire to migrate to western Europe – their own economy is too buoyant, and they are well-informed on the labour market prospects in the west."

Southeast Turkey is home to one of the oldest Christian civilizations in the world - the Assyrians who were among the first to convert to Christianity. Among their ancient traditions is making wine, in a way that has changed little since the time of the Roman Empire. But the region they live in is at the center of a bloody conflict between Kurdish rebels and the Turkish state, and most fled the region to Europe and the U.S. But in the town of Midyat in southeast Turkey a few people are keeping the winemaking tradition alive."

"Disgracefully, Turkey's EU accession bid is going nowhere soon
As a weak Europe frets over Turkey's membership, the booming south-eastern nation is increasingly thinking: why bother?
Seen from Turkey, the squabble about the EU budget seems like fiddling while Brussels burns. In the Turkish perspective, the large issues for Europe should not be the latest carve-up of the budgetary cake, or the palace power struggle between the European parliament and the member states, or even the necessary budgetary disciplines that Germany demands of its more rule-resistant partners and to which economically booming Turkey, unlike its economically wracked neighbour Greece, could sign up with barely a second's thought."

Human rights − 27-10-2010 - 11:21
The outcome of Turkey's constitutional reform referendum was a step towards EU accession, but Turkey must do more, both to protect press and religious freedoms and to resolve the northern Cyprus issue, Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Füle told a joint meeting of MEPs and Turkish MPs on Tuesday. This echoed concerns, voiced at a Human Rights Committee hearing on Monday, about lack of press freedom, the imprisonment of conscientious objectors, and the treatment of Turkey's Kurdish minority. "

Details and outlook
The Turkish Central Bank came out today with its quarterly inflation report, which saw no change in the bank’s year-end inflation estimates for 2010 at 7.5%. While food prices are seen to rise with the rest of the world, this impact is believed to be mitigated by lower-thanexpected non-food inflation, effectively taking the food price appreciation out of the immediate monetary policy decision, as we had also alluded to in our earlier research (read more here). The minor changes came in the forecasts for 2011 and 2012, both of which were raised by 10 basis points to 5.4% and 5.1%, respectively."

The changing presence of Turkey in the Middle East signals a new balance of power, experts say.
Since the onset of the 20th century, Turkey has historically been tied to the West, particularly when it served as a buffer against the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Renewed relations with the US followed the signing of the Oslo peace accords in 1993 between Israel and the Palestinians. Former US President Bill Clinton labored to create a bloc of friends in the region, and Turkey was at the forefront of those friends after the signing of a military cooperation agreement between Ankara and Tel Aviv. Turkey does not fit neatly into anyone's conception of the world order. For centuries, people have debated or fought over whether it is part of Europe, the Middle East, the Mediterranean, or Eurasia. Some see its current government as careening toward 'Islamist fascism'; others believe it is integrating into a basically pluralistic, secular, globalized international order. Does its fast-growing economy, the 17th largest in the world, make it a rising international power on a par with Brazil, China, India, and Russia? Or is it a minor player that is overextending itself? Although Turkey has an important secondary role to play in many major areas of U.S. concern, such as stabilizing Afghanistan and Iraq, it is essential to none. In short, Turkey is unusually vulnerable to being misunderstood, particularly since the Turks themselves often seem unsure about what exactly they want their country to be."

In short, Turkey is unusually vulnerable to being misunderstood, particularly since the Turks themselves often seem unsure about what exactly they want their country to be."

by Jessie Daniels | October 26th, 2010
Visitors to Turkey are warned about developing a “Turkish muscle” – the extra belly fat that you get from eating too much Turkish food. Yet it’s the country’s desire to flex its foreign policy muscle that has, at times, proved worrisome. Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu’s “Zero-Problems” foreign policy, which emphasizes regional engagement and outlines an active role in promoting Turkey’s interests on the world stage, is a far cry from Turkey’s past practice of isolating itself from its neighbors. But some of its recent diplomatic forays under this policy, especially the nuclear fuel swap deal with Iran and renewed relations with Syria, have led some in the West to query whether we are losing Turkey."

"Is It Islamic or Islamist?
By Hayri Abaza and Soner Cagaptay
Newsweek, October 22, 2010
Now that even the tolerant, liberal Swedes have elected an anti-Islam party to their Parliament, it's pretty clear that such controversies are mounting because both the left and the right are confused over the politics of Islam. The left is wrongly defending Islamism -- an extremist and at times violent ideology -- which it confuses with the common person's Islam, while the right is often wrongly attacking the Muslim faith, which it confuses with Islamism. Western thinkers must begin to recognize the difference between Islamism and Islam, or we are headed toward an ideologically defined battle with one quarter of humanity."

"Labour party demands apology from Dutch PM
In what looks like a co-ordinated press offensive, Dutch Labour leader Job Cohen has accused Prime Minister Mark Rutte of being inconsistent about government ministers with dual nationality. Labour has been in opposition since the swearing in of a new right-wing cabinet earlier this month.
Mr Cohen is demanding an apology for a remark made by the current Prime Minister in 2007, when he was a member of the opposition. At the time, free-market liberal Mark Rutte said that Labour Deputy Minister Nebahat Albayrak, who is of Turkish descent, should give up her Turkish passport in favour of her Dutch one. But three years on, Mr Rutte himself appointed a deputy Health minister with dual Dutch and Swedish nationality, saying he "saw no problem" in doing so."

Mehmet Ozkan | 22 Oct 2010
The news that Turkey and China had organized a joint military exercise at the huge Konya airbase in Turkey's central Anatolian region last month came as a surprise to many. After all, just a year ago, when clashes between Uighur and Han Chinese broke out in China's Xinjiang province in July 2009, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused Chinese authorities of mishandling a situation that he compared to 'genocide.' What explains such a dramatic improvement in relations between Turkey and China? And how should this military exercise be understood in the context of the current shifts taking place in global power politics?"
