"Turkish FM defends president's Republic Day reception

National and religious days, known in Turkey as “bayrams,” have the ability to unite society and common symbols should not be perceived as threats, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu said Saturday.

Celebrating his country’s Republic Day thousands of miles away from Turkey, Davutoğlu spoke to reporters en route from Xi’an to Shanghai about the presidential reception in Ankara that had become a subject of controversy due to the presence of women wearing headscarves at the event."
