Ahead of general elections to be held in the Netherlands on Nov. 22, two separate Dutch parties removed three Turkish-origin politicians from their lists of candidates to run for a seat in Parliament. Christian Democrat Appeal (CDA) officials decided to expel Ayhan Tonca and Osman Elmaci from the party because they denied the existence of the so-called Armenian genocide. The Labor Party of the Netherlands also expelled Erdinc Sacan for the same reason. Elmaci and Tonca were first flexible in the face of this pressure. But as they were expected to state it in written form, they resisted. And they were expelled after this resistance."

Turkey has come a long way from the instability and structural weaknesses which undermined its economy in the 1990s, bringing the country to a virtual halt in 2001 with a violent recession. Indeed, the tough IMF-backed reforms adopted in the aftermath of the collapse, combining tight fiscal and monetary policies with a broad range of reforms aimed at addressing other deep-seated distortions, seem to have set Turkey on a healthier development path, with economic growth rates in the 2002-2005 period averaging 7 percent, and inflation rates falling dramatically to single-digit figures. "U.S. envoy says anti-PKK commitment shared by U.S., Iraq and Turkey
The Associated Press
Published: September 27, 2006
WASHINGTON Retired Gen. Joseph W. Ralston, U.S. special envoy for countering the Kurdish Workers Party or PKK, said Wednesday he believes the United States, Iraq and Turkey share a commitment to work toward elimination of PKK rebels in Iraqi territory.
At a news conference, Ralston rejected suggestions in the Turkish press that part of his duties will include working as a "coordinator" with the PKK.
Such suggestions are the "furthest thing from the truth," he said.
Ralston's recent appointment as special envoy suggests the U.s. governent is giving higher priority to Turkish concerns about the PKK presence in northern Iraq, across the border from Turkey.
That issue is certain to come up next week when Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan visits Washington for talks with President George W. Bush and other officials.
Despite Ralston's suggestion that the United States, Turkey and Iraq are working in harmony against the PKK, there is strong evidence of Turkish-Iraqi tension over the issue.
In a speech here this week, Iraqi President Jalal Talabani complained about alleged Turkish military interference in northern Iraq.
"Iraq is not so weak our neighbors can do anything and we will remain silent," Talabani said. On Wednesday, Erdogan denied any such interference.
Ralston called Turkey the best possible friend for Iraq in the neighborhood. "We need to stop the violence and allow economic ties to flourish," he said, referring to hostilities he said were inspired by the PKK.
Ralston said he does not attach any priority to achieving a cease-fire with the PKK because that would confer a status on the group that it does not deserve.
But, he said, "If they lay down their arms, that would be good." He added that use of military force to dislodge the PKK from northern Iraq should be a last resort.
Ralston declined comment on whether Turkey should do more to make membership in the PKK less appealing to Turkish Kurds.
He said that any PKK offices in Iraq should be shut down and that the group's financial transactions should be curbed.
Ralston added that no Turkish Kurd who committed violence against innocent civilians should be granted amnesty.
The PKK has been fighting for autonomy in Turkey's largely Kurdish southeast since 1984 in a fight that has left some 37,000 dead.
The group, which is considered a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union, has recently stepped up its attacks against troops, tourist sites and government targets in Turkey.

The membership aspect of the EU is shaped in terms of the criteria determined by the Union. The Copenhagen and Maastricht criteria are the well-known ones among them to be carried out by the candidate countries which are willing to join the EU. A negotiation process, whose duration depends mostly on the capacity of the candidate country to adopt the EU acquis, is also performed in order to pave the way for the full membership. Even tough the process is named as the ‘negotiation’ one; it is actually far from being a bargaining process. Instead, it is more one-sided course of action undertaken by the candidate country."

The European Commission president's remarks late Monday about the suspension of the Union's enlargement process after Bulgaria and Romania join were clarified immediately by his spokesperson, who assured Ankara that Barroso didn't intend the exclusion of Turkey.
Right after the short-lived alarm bells went off in Turkey over remarks by Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, where he said that no more countries should join the bloc after Romania and Bulgaria, until the European Union has decided what to do with its stalled constitution, his spokesperson reassured Ankara, saying, 'Turkey's EU membership is not expected before 2015. That's why Barroso did not mean to exclude Turkey with his words.'"

BY MATEIN KHALID
27 September 2006
THE Turkish Parliament has now voted to send troops on the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon. This is a milestone event in Turkish foreign policy under the Recip Tayyip Erdogan government. The 340 -192 vote is a political victory for the Prime Minister and a strategic paradigm shift in Turkish foreign relations from the West to its Middle Eastern neighbourhood. Erdogan spent a huge amount of political capital convincing opponents of the Lebanon troop deployment that Turkish participation in an international force would not be a diplomatic coup for Israel or the United States. Lebanon is, after all, a former province of the Ottoman Empire’s Syrian possessions."

The Evening Bulletin - Israeli And U.S. Perspectives On Regional Security
"....The panel used Turkey as a case study of Islamism. Turkey's constitution is secular and its armed forces serves as a guarantor of secularism. Yet, the current government is Islamic and tends to invoke Islam as an example of Turkish glory. Gerald Robbins pointed out that "the secular parties in Turkey objected to sending Turkish forces to Lebanon 'to defend Israel' while the Foreign Minister declared that 'we are doing it as part of our Mediterranean Policy." Robbins defined Turkey's foreign policy as the "New Ottomanism." He also emphasized the contrasts in Turkey with on the one hand a burgeoning middle-class, and on the other increased usage of hijabs in Istanbul.
The Turkish government slogans, the panel felt, were not coherent and the defenders of secularism suspected its objectives.
Ephraim Inbar added that "Ataturk brought change to Turkey but unfortunately the Arabs do not have an Ataturk." "

The Director of Programmes of the Institute for Regional and International Studies Marin Lessenski comments on Turkey’s cooling toward the EU and the US:
Turkey has been steadily moving away from the West in recent years and pursuing its own policy that some experts refer to as Eurasian, and the Transatlantic public opinion survey of 12 European countries and the US showed that Turkish people approve that. The downward trend in Turkey-US relations was there since the Iraqi war, when Turkey denied American troops access to its territory. Americans were then mad at Turkey, to say the least, and further frictions followed when Turkey warmed to Syria and Iran. Turkey has recently also developed a security co-operation with Iran. And this year, the US named Iran security threat number one."
