Istanbul has a vibrant modern art scene that includes trendy new galleries, the Contemporary Istanbul art fair, several cutting-edge art book publishers, a modern art museum and its own biennial, which opened Sept. 16 and is as ambitious as it gets, especially in a country that many deem nationalistic in its modern art preferences. Using Cuban artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres's life and work as a starting point, and calling itself "Untitled," after the way G-T named his pieces, the biennial presents an international perspective on the questions contemporary Turkish artists seem to be asking themselves about identity, violence, media and war.

There is no recession in Byzantium. To buy his £70 worth of magazines, the man ahead of me in the Istanbul newsagent touch-types his pin number while looking at a twinkling display of watches. He barely registers the cost of the glossy stack: Yacht Park & Lifestyle, Motorboat Month. Last year European City of Culture, this year European Capital of Sport and boasting an outstanding art biennial, the city that straddles Europe and Asia is resurgent. Aside from cars and cats – there are millions of both, all equally ungovernable – what strikes you most are the cashpoints. I have never seen a city with so many, nor one that boasted bigger national flags – immense red rectangles the size of basketball courts, billowing in the breeze that whips up off the Bosphorus.

The recent rise in the number of Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, attacks is making the Recep Tayyip Erdoğan government very angry, which is striving to manage the process, especially in order to decrease the speed of terrorist acts and reduce their negative impact. So far the prime minister has made several attempts, two of which are interesting because of their interrelated yet contrasting nature. On the one hand, the government has made efforts to upgrade its intelligence capability, especially by purchasing “unmanned aerial vehicles-UAVs” which have been recently seen as the most popular data gathering instruments. On the other hand, it is trying to maintain its cooperation with some countries -especially Iran- against the PKK.

Why Is Obama Giving Predators to Turkey?
By Michael Rubin

If leading from behind is the first rule of the Obama doctrine, then its second defining feature is the disconnect between an adversary’s behavior and its reward. Over the last year, Turkey has sided with Iran on the nuclear issue, held secret air force war games with China without first informing the Pentagon or NATO, threatened to initiate military action against Israel and Cyprus, and made anti-American rhetoric a staple of the Turkish ruling party’s proxy press.

Much hyperbole has been deployed in describing Turkey's reorientation towards the Middle East. Partly, this has been the fault of the Turks themselves, who have sought to ride the wave of Ankara's popularity in the region - primarily a result of its rift with Israel and vocal support for the Palestinian cause. But the reality is considerably more complicated, as Turkey is increasingly drawn into the treacherous byways of Arab and Iranian affairs

Istanbul: The Maddest City in Europe
Fishermen pass the hours along the Bosporus Strait. They occasionally catch sardines.
Miles from even the suburbs, hours before it can be seen on the distant horizon, Istanbul can be felt. It seems to get louder and hotter as one gets nearer. The traffic thickens. Dust and cement replace grassy goat pastures. Freeways begin to crisscross the land in a madhouse maze. Like space junk careening around an overpopulated planet, trucks and buses converge and cross paths from all directions, blasting the cyclist who dodges among them with fiery belches of exhaust. By 4 p.m., I had come 100 miles and was immersed in metropolitan mayhem, yet the city center remained 20 miles away.

Bathing with strangers: what to expect at a Turkish hammam
by Melanie Renzulli (RSS feed) on Sep 27th 2011 at 11:00AM
In Turkey, one of the quickest ways to break the ice is to get naked in a room full of strangers. I'm talking, of course, about visiting the hammam. The hammam, or Turkish bath, has been around since the ancient Romans ruled much of Anatolia, and flourished during the Ottoman Empire, when baths were built in almost every city to address both public hygiene as well as provide a place for socializing.

Exclusive: TIME Meets Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan
Posted by Ishaan Tharoor Monday, September 26, 2011 at 7:53 pm
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is the international statesman of the moment. Greeted as a rock-star in Egypt and other countries transformed by the Arab Spring, the Turkish premier looms like a colossus over the Middle East. In recent weeks, he has been one of the most vocal of world leaders to back the Palestinian statehood bid at the United Nations. Popular at home, Erdogan has been in his position since 2003, and was recently re-elected to a new term. All the while, both Turkey's economy and geo-political footprint are growing noticeably. Erdogan sat down with TIME's Jim Frederick, Bobby Ghosh, Tony Karon, Matt McAllester and Ishaan Tharoor on the sidelines of U.N. meetings in New York. The following are excerpts from the conversation, touching upon Turkey's deteriorating relationship with Israel, the failures of the Mideast peace process, Erdogan's support for the Arab Spring and frustrations with the U.N., and whether anybody in Ankara still cares about joining the EU.

Watching The World: Turkey overplays its hand

Turkey's government has made repeated efforts to establish itself as an oil and gas transit hub between Europe and Central Asia. But those efforts will come to naught if Ankara is not careful. The main sticking point is Turkey's unwillingness to move beyond its 1974 invasion of the island of Cyprus, an invasion that has left the country divided into a Greek-speaking south and a Turkish-speaking north ever since.

ANKARA, Turkey — The leaders of Turkey and Greece on Monday discussed a dispute over oil and gas drilling off the divided island of Cyprus, officials from both countries said.
Cyprus is divided into a Greek Cypriot south and a breakaway Turkish Cypriot north. The southern government began exploratory drilling for oil and gas last week, prompting strong protests from Turkey, which doesn’t recognize the Greek Cypriot administration. Turkey signed an oil and gas exploration deal with the Turkish Cypriots and sent a Turkish research to the Mediterranean to start oil and gas exploration in response.

The Istanbul Biennial is not for the faint of heart. Where else would one encounter a UEFA Football event between Israeli and Turkish teams on the same evening (and on the same road) as the biennial's opening? From the moment one arrives at the airport and waits interminably to purchase a visa to first encountering the almost unimaginable traffic jams — which can turn a 20-minute jaunt into a two-hour nightmare of a journey — even the most intrepid art explorers might be tempted to turn back. But that would be a mistake.

ISTANBUL — Not so long ago, the foreign policy of Turkey revolved around a single issue: the divided island of Cyprus. These days, its prime minister may be the most popular figure in the Middle East, its foreign minister envisions a new order there and its officials have managed to do what the Obama administration has so far failed to: position themselves firmly on the side of change in the Arab revolts and revolutions.

Israeli commandoes attacked a flotilla taking humanitarian aid to Gaza Strip in May 2010, killing nine Turk activists on board of a flotilla ship. The attack triggered a political crisis which strained Ankara’s ties with Tel Aviv. Turkey then called for immediate removal of Gaza siege, Israel’s apology to Turkey and payment of remuneration to families of the victims. Following publication of Palmer’s report which worked within framework of a UN committee set up to investigate the case, Turkey reduced political relations with Israel and expelled its ambassador. Ankara also threatened Tel Aviv with trade embargo and added that Turkish warships will escort ships that will carry further humanitarian aid to Gaza. Such a policy has had no precedence since Israel came into being. Although it made Palestinians and other Muslims happy and put tremendous regional pressure on Israel, it also gave rise to questions about the main causes behind Turkey’s decision to adopt that policy. Has Israel’s attack on the flotilla and not apologizing to Ankara been enough motives for Turkey to adopt that policy? If so, why it has been adopted after the lapse of 16 months?

For Erdogan has not only been using aggressive rhetoric against Israel. In the last few weeks the Turkish government has also been threatening Cyprus for developing its undersea gas resources in the Mediterranean. As a result, Russia has been drawn in to neutralize Turkish behaviour.
