Back in 2005, the now-emeritus scholar Guenter Lewy published The Armenian Massacres in Ottoman Turkey: A Disputed Genocide, a book that argued that there wasn’t much evidence that the massacre of Armenians during World War I was caused by a deliberate Turkish plan to destroy the Armenian people—and, thus, that the Armenian deaths didn’t qualify as a genocide.
Whereupon the Southern Poverty Law Center declared that “Lewy is one of the most active members of a network of American scholars, influence peddlers and website operators, financed by hundreds of thousands of dollars each year from the government of Turkey, who promote the denial of the Armenian genocide.”
Lewy sued, and it has now been announced that the Southern Poverty Law Center will, in settlement, entirely retract their claims, publishing the retraction is several prominent places."

Turkey's Vegetable Cornucopia

by Regina Schrambling

It was a busy weekend for vegetable-trashing: My hometown paper ran two stories on how Americans resist anything but french fries even when carrots are packaged like Doritos.
All the reasons have been gone over so often I get weary just recounting them. But a new cookbook that landed on my doorstop makes me wonder if the problem might be that vegetables are second-class ingredients in this country, too often relegated to the side of the plate. Using just one recipe, I turned a pound of zucchini into a crustless pie that kept me happy for days."

TO A layman like me, the Sept. 6 letter of Health Undersecretary Alexander Padilla raised more questions on Turkish flour than answers.
First, how can Padilla claim that the tests on Turkish flour were transparent when no representatives of the media or consuming public were allowed to witness the purported tests? Second, how come the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) waited until March 27 (a Saturday when government offices are closed) to test the samples of Turkish flour it allegedly gathered from March 9 to March 22 (a Monday)? What happened between March 23 and 26?"

Mavi Boncuk: Elements of Turkic Mythologies
"Elements of Turkic Mythologies
Mavi Boncuk | The Wolf symbolizes honour and is also considered the mother of most Turkic peoples. Asena[1] (Ashina Tuwu) is the wolf mother of Bumen, the first Khan of the Göktürks.
The Horse is also one of the main figures of Turkic mythology; Turks considered the horse an extension of the individual -though generally dedicated to the male- and see that one is complete with it. This might have led to or sourced from the term 'At-Beyi' (Horse-Lord).
The Dragon (Evren), also expressed as a Snake or Lizard, is the symbol of might and power. It is believed, especially in mountainous Central Asia, that dragons still live in the mountains of Tian Shan/Tengri Tagh and Altay. Dragons also symbolize the god Tengri (Tanrı) in ancient Turkic tradition, although dragons themselves are not worshipped as gods."

(CNN) -- Israel's decision in May to intercept an aid flotilla headed to Gaza -- an incident that left nine people dead -- remains a diplomatic stumbling block between Israel and Turkey, the countries' leaders said Sunday.
Israeli President Shimon Peres and Turkish President Abdullah Gul both appeared, separately, on CNN's 'Fareed Zakaria GPS,' where they gave their points of view on the contentious issue that has divided the traditional allies."

"Quotes From Istanbul: the Writers and Literary Translators International Congress
So I ostensibly live in Indiana at the moment, but this funny thing happened earlier this month where I was in Istanbul with a bunch of literary translators.
The Writers and Literary Translators International Congress (WALTIC) began as a brainchild of the Swedish Writers Union and inaugurated in Stockholm in 2008. I was there with my boss, the Mongolian Writers Union Director Khaidav Chilaajav, to present a paper on Mongolian poetry on his behalf. (Just when I thought my Henry Luce year couldn't get better, I was in Stockholm meeting Philip Pullman in the gold room where they give out the Nobel Prize for literature. I was 23, and it rendered pretty much everything that's happened since then lackluster in comparison. I nerded Pullman hard. I nerded so hard the poor man actually ran away from me.) The Congress identified several goals and priorities, among them the international safeguarding of freedom of expression and increasing literacy."

"Turkey as Test Case of U.S. Approach to Regionalism
Judah Grunstein | Bio | 23 Sep 2010
The theory behind Turkey's foreign policy, as summed up by Turkish academic-turned-Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, is the 'zero problems with neighbors' policy. As such, Turkey has put increasing effort into resolving longstanding tensions in its regional relations. The results have admittedly been spotty. Bilateral ties with Syria, Iran and Kurdish Iraq are notable successes. The rapprochement with Armenia is still a work in progress. The historic friendship with Israel has suffered dramatically from Turkey's decision to take a more vocal position on the question of Gaza. But in theory, it's a great approach to 21st century foreign policy, which is going to put an increasing premium on regionalism, whereby a Middle Power can be a big fish in a medium-size pond."

MEHMET ALİ BİRAND
Usually I do not like fortunetelling, but it has something mysterious about it. No one knows whether or not guesses turn out to be right but everyone always listens out of curiosity.
Today I feel a bit like a fortuneteller. Looking at my data on hand I will try and take a guess at what Turkey will be like in 10 to 15 years’ time. Very difficult though, because I know data on hand may change any minute and my calculations may be senseless. But there are data that won’t change no matter what. Based on just these data I will tell Turkey’s fortune."

"Islamists vs. Hipsters in Istanbul
September 22, 2010 - 8:24am, by Yigal Schleifer
It appears that things have finally come to a boil in Istanbul rapidly gentrifying and trendy Beyoglu district. Last night, a group of some 30 men wielding sticks and stones attacked the openings of two neighboring galleries in the area, smashing windows, spraying pepper spray, and injuring at least five people.
The attack took place in a part of the neighborhood that has become something of an arts hub, with several new independent galleries opening up there in recent years. The Istanbul Modern, the city's first modern arts museum, is just down the hill from the galleries."
