"Destination guides: The Basilica Cistern, Istanbul, Turkey

by Elizabeth Coughlan

The Basilica Cistern, known locally as the Yerebatan Sarnici, stands as a glorious testament to the skill of Roman engineering. Water supply has always been a problem in Istanbul, and in ancient times water was fed to the city through a system of waterways and reservoirs. The Emperor, Great Constantinius, who ruled from 324 to 337, began a major reconstruction of the city's failing water supply, which included a small cistern where the Basilica Cistern is located today. However, by the time the Byzantine Emperor, Justinian 1, came to power (527-565), this network was also failing and unable to supply the needs of an ever-growing population. To increase its capacity, Justinian had the cistern enlarged to its present dimensions of approximately 140 x 70m (460 x 230 ft)."

Mick Hartley: The View from Turkey

"The View from Turkey

The main thrust of this piece in Standpoint by Claire Berlinski (via), who lives in Istanbul, concerns the disjunction between the benign picture of the ruling Islamist AKP party as presented in the Western media, and the ugly reality:

When Western journalists note in a casual aside that press freedom has experienced certain setbacks under the AKP, they are failing to do justice to the severity of this calamity and its ramifications for Turkey and the region. The calamity is exacerbated by the tendency of the foreign media to repeat, without scrutiny, the very idiocies peddled in the Turkish press, where the range of opinion on offer has become severely limited. The result is the growth of a grossly distorted and dangerous consensus about Turkey, here and abroad — to wit, that Turkey under the AKP has become more democratic and politically healthier..."

One of the more interesting and significant recent developments regarding the Kurdish issue in Turkey has been the growing talk about increasing political autonomy for the predominantly-Kurdish southeast region. Such talk has been bubbling under the surface for years, but it has become more pronounced recently, with Kurdish politicians speaking more openly about their vision for a more autonomous Kurdish region within Turkey.Following up on this development, the Hurriyet Daily News has a very interesting interview with Gultan Kisanak, co-chair of the Peace and Democracy Party (BDP), Turkey's main pro-Kurdish party. "Germany Needs More Foreigners

A new book by Thilo Sarrazin, a board member of Germany's central bank, accusing immigrants of dragging down the country, has unleashed a new immigration debate. Yet neither side is addressing the real issue: Germany's rapidly aging population.

We don't know if Thilo Sarrazin intended to stall the debate on immigration to Germany, but it's clear that his polemical book has had precisely that effect."

"Turkish opposition's amnesty proposal draws ire from AKP, MHP

Turkey’s ruling and nationalist parties have reacted harshly to the main opposition party leader’s proposal of a general amnesty in the fight against terrorism, but the move has been welcomed by Turkey’s main pro-Kurdish party.

Speaking at a Republican People’s Party, or CHP, referendum rally in his hometown of Tunceli on Wednesday, party leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu said a general amnesty could become part of the agenda if the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, laid down its arms."

I sit on a veranda on a hilltop overlooking the Turkish Mediterranean coast some 40 minutes outside the tourist hub of Bodrum. On the steep road snaking past my view a lone rider on a horse with a flag for the CHP secularist party clops by, a fancy folksy gimmick cooked up to show that they are the true party of ordinary folk. He goes from village square to village square advising the locals to vote 'no' in the upcoming September referendum, one initiated by the pro-Islamic AK party to begin changing the Constitution in its favor."

Gideon Rachman made a compelling case this week for Turkey’s admission to the European Union, if also with one key qualifier: no freedom of movement for workers and immigrants. There are simply too many Turks who would love to move west and, no matter how much reasonable people may dislike the backlash, that kind of influx would create strains from Narvik to Naples. As Mr Rachman puts it: “Mass migration, particularly from Muslim countries such as Turkey, is unpopular enough to transform domestic politics in some western European countries.”"
