Turkish, A Different Language
Turkish is fundamentally 'different' than the vast majority of the languages that you have probably encountered so far. Because it does NOT belong to Indo-European Languages family (which surround all over the world) such as English, French, Spanish or German on the European Side and Persian or Indian languages on the other side. It also does NOT belong to Semitic languages family including Arabic and Jewish (Hebrew), so it has nothing to do with the so called Middle Languages (except for the large amount of borrowed vocabulary but not the language structure at all). It does NOT even have anything to do with the Southasian languages like Chinese or African languages etc."

Best chance for a solution since 1974
By Stefanos Evripidou
A NEW peace process in Cyprus offers the best opportunity since the Turkish invasion to solve the division of the island, according to the latest report from the International Crisis Group (ICG), a Brussels-based think tank.
The report attributes the “window of opportunity” to the election of President Demetris Christofias, who together with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, have demonstrated the political will to make current talks succeed. Both leaders are characterised in the report as “pro-settlement” while Christofias was singled out for his efforts to “reverse the previous government’s hardline rejection of compromise”."

Informed Comment: Arato: The Turkish Constitutional Crisis and the Road Beyond
Guest editorial
Andrew Arato
We should be deeply worried about Turkey’s unfolding constitutional crisis, that could end in many things: the continuation and even conclusion of the long democratic transition; military coup with entirely uncertain consequences; or, in between them an unproductive stalemate. Obviously only the first can enable Turkey to become a member of the European Union, and remain the much needed bridge it already is between the “West” and the “Islamic World” (if these categories have any meaning)."

Turkey Beyond Kemalism By Mir Adnan Aziz

The Ottoman Empire, with Turkey as the epicenter, was supposedly the zenith of the Islamic Caliphate. Its decline began in the sixteenth century. The initial response of the Ottoman court was to reform its military on the European model. Intended to be limited strictly to the military, it however led to more far-reaching consequences. In the mid-1700s, the Ottoman Empire had acquired a distinct European taint that compromised its core base. By the late 1700s there was no longer an Islamic authority that could even in principle mobilize the Muslims to support a war against any aggressor."

Drought and negligence threaten Turkey’s lakes, rivers
Turkey has suffered a dramatic fall in the level of its potable water supply in recent months, with the water level in dams dropping alarmingly low and major rivers and lakes, particularly in central Anatolia, beginning to dry up. Experts say that unregulated irrigation, together with pollution and global warming, are to blame for the country's looming water shortage, which may pose threats both economic and natural. Officials are urging citizen s to take measures for water conservation in the hope of mitigating the effects of what increasingly appears
to be a drought, perhaps a severe one."

One of the most dramatic stories in a world facing record-high energy prices has been the relentless rise of Azeri, Kazakh and Russian Caspian oil exports from southern Russia since the collapse of the USSR 17 years ago. Since 1991 Turkey has watched with growing alarm as the tanker traffic in the Istanbul Bogazi (Bosporus) and Canakkale Bogazi (Dardanelles), known collectively as the Turkish Straits (Turk Bogazlari), has increased, year after year. The horns started sounding in the streets of Berlin eight hours before the opening whistle blew. For the better part of a week, German black, red and gold flags sprouted from car windows, clothes lines, window sills right across Germany. In Berlin, the schnell-bahn rapid transit line was taken over by chanting fans, draped in national colors, swigging half-liter bottles of beer and singing for their teams victory. One half a million Berliners converged on the Brandenburg Gate in the historic center of the old capital to watch the game on giant screens. As in 2006, when Berlin hosted soccer's World Cup, a country not given to displays of national pride (since the Second World War) allowed itself to feel good about being German."

The Swiss half of Euro 2008 draws to a close on a warm summer evening after a blazing, humid, summer day on which temperatures in Basel reached 30 degrees Centigrade, or 86 Fahrenheit.
Basel was flooded by fans in Turkish red and German white. But many seemed to have traveled simply to be in the vicinity of the game. The St. Jakob stadium has a capacity of just over 38,000, meaning this was the lowest crowd for a Euro semifinal since 1992, in Sweden. The later stages of a knockout competition are in any case a problem for fans. The vast bulk of tickets are sold before the competition, and fans must hope their team will make the last four."

The increasing presence of representatives from Turkey — both corporate executives and government officials — at the annual Bilderberg conferences has coincided with stepped-up pressure from the White House, the State Department, and the bureaucracy of the European Union to grant the Islamic nation full EU membership. There is, however, strong resistance to Turkey’s EU accession in virtually every EU country, based on memories of centuries of bloody Turkish conquest, the fear of Turkish mass migration, and the likelihood of massive transfers of economic aid from EU taxpayers to Turkey, as occurred when other poor countries acceded to EU membership."

Adrenaline-fuelled Turks sense greatness in their grasp | Football | The Guardian
Many things have changed in Turkey since May 1968: the cost of a rail ticket, for instance, then £40 for a third-class return from London on the old twice-weekly Direct-Orient Express, or the population of Istanbul, then around 750,000, mostly living in handsome wooden fire-hazards, but now more than 11m, largely quartered in concrete apartment blocks. At least two things, however, remain exactly the same: the ornate 19th-century Sirkeci rail terminus, where a portrait of Ataturk hangs over the mahogany desk in the station master's immaculate office, and the passion for football."

Turkish flair at Euro 2008
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) - The armies of the Ottoman Empire could not conquer Vienna. Eleven soccer players from Turkey can.
