"Gunduz Aktan: Turkish-US relations (1)
Thursday, February 3, 2005
Our relations with the United States are headed towards a serious crisis. The most important crisis with this country, which was the backbone of our defense during the Cold War, occurred in 1964 with the Johnson letter. The Greeks attacked the Turkish Cypriots. The United States did nothing to stop the Greek Cypriots while preventing Turkey from doing anything. The problem was postponed by U.N. Security Council Resolution 186 (1964) regarding the sending of a peacekeeping force to the island. Turkey was forced to intervene as the result of the 1974 Sampson coup. Afterwards, the U.S. Congress imposed an arms embargo on Turkey. "
