Turkey celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2023. For centuries, Turkey has straddled two worlds – Europe and the Middle East. In the early 2000s, the country was hailed as a “model democracy” for Muslim-majority countries. However, Turkey was rated as “not free” by the Freedom House 20 years later a label it shares with Russia, China and Iran. With Recep Tayyip Erdogan securing a third term in office, what does this mean for the country?
