Now, some of them are called 'Germans.' But the reality is that many of them are internal Kurdish exiles. This is not a stable situation."

Nearly one month ago, the Gaza Freedom Flotilla arrived at the port of Ashdod after a clash between the passengers of the Turkish ship Mavi Marmara and Israeli Navy commandos. The confrontation resulted in nine Turkish deaths, dozens of injured, and a crisis between two otherwise “friendly” states. When the Mavi Marmara was still somewhere in the Mediterranean with its passengers under arrest, we received a request from the Association of Turkish Jews in Israel calling for voluntary translators. In less then an hour, we were on an Ashdod-bound bus. As Turkish Jews living in Israel, we had already felt great distress upon hearing the news. Growth accelerated to an annual 11 percent from 6 percent in the previous three months, according to the median estimate of 11 economists surveyed by Bloomberg. "Erdogan faces US stick, Kurdish rebel upsurge, yet clings to anti-Israel stance
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report June 26, 2010, 2:44 PM (GMT+02:00)

As he took off for the G20 summit opening in Toronto Saturday, June 26, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Erdogan came under an exceptionally acerbic US rebuke for a NATO member. He was accused of alienating the US and the West and told he needed to demonstrate Ankara's commitment to their (NATO) partnership by Philip Gordon, top US diplomat on European affairs, in a clear rejection of the Turkish prime minister's assertion in parliament Tuesday June 15: 'There's no shift in Turkey's axis. Turkey is not a city state, it's not a state on which agendas are imposed,' he said.

Taking Turkey to task for opposing the new UN sanctions on Iran and its anti-Israel rhetoric over the pro-Palestinian flotilla incident, the US official pointed out: 'There are people asking questions about it in a way that is new, and that in itself is a bad thing that makes it harder for the United States to support some of the things that Turkey would like to see us support.'"

Punishing Turkey

"Punishing Turkey

by Philip Giraldi

Does anyone remember the movie The Boys from Brazil? It told the story of how a group of top Nazis had moved to Brazil where they made a number of clones of Hitler-as-a-child that were being strategically placed around the world to eventually bring about a Fourth Reich. The movie ended ambiguously, with many of the Hitler children still alive and evidently expected to eventually turn into Hitler adults. The movie makers were clearly on to something because there have been a lot of Hitler sightings by Israel and its friends over the past few years. Saddam Hussein was described as a new Hitler while Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been depicted in even more heinous terms as a reborn Nazi leader preparing a new Holocaust. More recently Israel demonstrators have displayed effigies of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan with the hairline altered and a moustache added to create a caricature of Hitler."

Preparing for my trip to Istanbul for an interfaith meeting, I was nervous about the challenging encounters that awaited me. Convened by the World Council of Churches, the meeting’s focus was, “Christian Self-Understanding in the Context of Judaism.” Two dozen Christian theologians would reflect on how Christians understand themselves and their tradition, with their relationships to Jews and Judaism in mind. I was one of three Jews invited to serve as participant-observers in this intra-Christian conversation – to bring Jewish ears and sensibilities, to identify Christian blind spots, and to reflect back what was unbearably painful."

Reporting from Istanbul —
It seemed like a brilliant idea at the time: touring Turkey by train. Turkey was at the top of my list of countries I had yet to conquer, and trains have long been my favorite mode of transportation. Conjuring images of the old Orient Express, I envisioned lounging under a silk-shaded sconce in my plushly upholstered, wood-paneled compartment as the Mediterranean coast glided past my window."

Kevin MacDonald: The Jews turn on Turkey

Kevin MacDonald: Well, that didn’t take long. Turkey’s involvement in the flotilla and its support for the Palestinians has now made it an enemy of the Israel Lobby, with all that that entails. All in all, it’s a good example of Jewish power and moral particularism. After long opposing any resolution on Turkey’s genocide of Armenians, Rep. Howard Berman, a major force for Israel in the US Congress, suddenly supports a Congressional resolution, stating, “nothing justifies Turkey’s turning a blind eye to the reality of the Armenian genocide.” He and “a host of other members of the House’s unofficial Jewish caucus have signed on as co-sponsors.”"

Turkey’s Deception

"Turkey’s Deception

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s self-righteous proclamations in defense of the Palestinian Islamist terrorist group Hamas — (i.e. “Hamas is not a terrorist group,” “Hamas are resistance fighters who are struggling to defend their land, and they have won an election,” etc.) — are glaringly hypocritical and in accord with his Islamist ideological bent. Erdogan has become sufficiently confident in the wake of his July 2007 electoral victory. His Justice and Development party, known as AKP, received 47% of the vote, enabling him to form a single-party government, and he has since sought to forge an Islamic agenda for Turkey. His actions reveal his intent to lead the Arab and Muslim East while gambling that the Obama administration and the European Union will ignore his Islamist rhetoric and his increasingly radical actions. Aside from becoming a champion of Hamas, he is charting a course towards a revival of Ottoman hegemony by restoring the seat and center of the Caliphate."

"Demonizing Turkey is not the answer

By JOSHUA W. WALKER | 6/24/10 4:51 AM EDT

Washington is increasingly critical of Turkey, a “model partner” of the United States and NATO ally since 1952.

Political analysts, for example, cite Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s recent populist attacks on Israel and steadfast support of Iran to prove that Ankara has “switched sides.” Not so long ago, they point out, Ankara was the neoconservatives’ toast of the town."

Does anyone remember the movie The Boys from Brazil? It told the story of how a group of top Nazis had moved to Brazil where they made a number of clones of Hitler-as-a-child that were being strategically placed around the world to eventually bring about a Fourth Reich. The movie ended ambiguously, with many of the Hitler children still alive and evidently expected to eventually turn into Hitler adults."

Further thoughts on the status of Kurds in Turkey - The National Newspaper

"Further thoughts on the status of Kurds in Turkey

I was shocked to read the reader’s letter titled Turkey and Iran must recognise Kurdish identity (June 22). To present the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) as an innocent group of people seeking the recognition of the Kurdish identity goes beyond misrepresentation of the facts.

The PKK is an organisation that has waged a bloody war against the territorial integrity and unity of Turkey that has claimed more than 30,000 innocent lives over the past 30 years."

Erdogan charts a new course to the east

By Arnaud de Borchgrave

Geopolitical tectonic plates began grinding menacingly five years ago when Turkey embarked on negotiations for membership in the European Union. But it didn't take long for Ankara to conclude that the EU was playacting. There was little appetite for adding 70 million Turkish Muslims (80 million by the end of a projected 10-year negotiation) to EU's 20 million Muslims (Pakistani Brits, North African French, Turkish Germans). Church attendance in Europe is in steep decline while thousands of mosques are filled to overflowing. It was time for Turkey to move on."
