"North defies headscarf ban
By Simon Bahceli
EARLY in 2002, while working as an English teacher at the Eastern Mediterranean University in Famagusta, I was annoyed (but not surprised) to receive verbal instructions from the rector of the university telling my colleagues and I that we were to “inform” the school authorities if any female student was “caught” wearing a religious headscarf in class.
The instructions were read out by one of the rector’s minions at a staff meeting, during which we were also warned that some of the more devious students might try to get around the headscarf ban by wearing wigs. The only way to be sure was to give the wig a little tug, we were told."
